I wish I could say something like "oh that [artthing] you did on the [location] is so [coolartdescriptiveword]" but all I know is that it looks good and cool and like it requires a lot of talent and/or skill. lol.
If you'd thrown in cool art words, I'd probably have just smiled and nodded. When I was in art school and we did critiques, mine were always like, 'Good job, man. I dig what you put down on that paper there. A+. Would view again,' while everyone else tossed around the art terms. I was never much good at being pretentious in that sense ;)
That's a relief! I think it's cool to have that sort of modesty? Is that the right word? Because clearly you're talented, but avoiding pretension is cool! I am SUPER pretentious about my field. lol.
It's quite funny because I am actually rather pretentious in what I think is quality and what is shit. I think I just realised more than anyone else in my school that art is completely subjective - you can hammer on all you'd like about composition, colour, texture and any number of things that make up the technical aspect of a piece, but at the end of the day, because of those reasons, or in spite of them, you're ultimately going to love or hate it based on what you consider aesthetically pleasing. Pretending your work serves some greater agenda doesn't necessarily enhance its meaning. I think I differed in that I was honest in my work - I liked this picture of a thing, so I wanted to draw the thing
