Some Semblance of an Update: Nic's Life Edition.

Well, first and foremost, I have decided, rather on a whim, to observe the fasting aspect of Ramadan, and, whilst I'm only about three days in, I'm feeling pretty good about it, and I've kept to it (although I do allow myself one small concession in the form of an ice water at work during break (because we go on break at 6.30 - well after the sun ( Read more... )

I'm not Muslim myself but I am doing Ramadan again this year too- hang in there! Sounds like you are off to an amazing start.

I saw Sharknado last night although I missed the first bit since I had free tickets to a soccer game. How did you like it?

Oh, that's awesome! Does anyone around you observe it as well, or are you just doing it on your own? Like, do you eat suhoor or iftar with others?

This is the first time I've ever done it, but I think it's something I'll make into habit.

I'm watching it right now, and, as I expect from any SyFy original movie, it is beyond ridiculous.

How was the match?

I'm basically doing it alone but my close friends and family know I'm doing it. I thought ahead around Christmas (the only time dates are sold around here) and bought an extra box of dates so I'm just doing the best I can on my own. I bought some very useful gifts for the aforementioned people who know I'm doing it to give to them at the end and they know that I'm not looking to get anything in return so it should work out well. Other than that, it's just execution, really ( ... )

I was raised Catholic, so very familiar with Lent. Though I'm no longer a practising Catholic, I do still like to observe a Lenten fast as a challenge. While similar, I do think Ramadan, in my experience thus far, is a more complete fast, if that makes sense. Like, during Lent, I'm still basically free to consume what I'd like aside from the thing I've given up, so it seems less of a test of perseverance.

Next Sunday, my friends and I are going floating, which is just an excuse to get super day drunk on the river. I've no doubt that will mark the biggest challenge yet.

I know that certain elements of the movie are possible (waterspouts could pick up sea creatures, move inland, become tornados, drop them there; storm surges doing similar, etc etc etc), but on the whole, it's utterly ridiculous. And I love it for it.

But the best B-rated monster flick I've seen is Jurassic Shark. It is beyond quality in how awful it is.

I'm glad that you linked to the Wiki page because I didn't know that it was a form of fasting only during the day. I feel like I have accidentally been observing Ramadan my whole life. If I'm understanding correctly that you can eat before sunrise and after sunset?

or going through menstrual bleeding

I'm glad that the observation makes exceptions.

Yes, exactly.

I'm sorry to report I fell off the wagon a bit and took far too much advantage of the exceptions. Oops!
