I think that is one of the hardest parts about living with my mom, although she isnt as bad as some people, she thinks I spoil Matthew because I pick him up as soon as he starts crying. Even worse my whole family is on my ass because I dont put him in a playpen. I have one it is just a big toybox, for some reason they think that he should be playing in there all day rather than free to roam the floor.

I get criticized for "spoiling" my kid, mostly by my mom. And I think it's pretty ridiculous for hugs and holding to be considered spoiling. Of course, when my daughter gives her grandma a big hug, you don't hear any talk about spoiling then ;).
I agree with you. I think, as Americans, we are so isolated from each other, and some of us take pride in the weirdest things, like a baby's ability to sleep on its own in a crib.
