I'm tired of people who don't listen to good music...

I followed her. I used to live in Marion, and the things you are citing now are a large portion of why I chose not to go there when I graduated from Lakeview in '99. (Well, that and the fact that they didn't have my chosen degree program.)
I just visited campus a couple weeks ago, and I am tired of the numerous, unnecessary references to John Wesley on campus hit me; the statue of the guy, which was not there last I checked, seems more than a bit unnecessary.
Also, ...more money than they know what to do with and ...basking in its prestige of being one of the fastest growing Christian colleges in the nation are excellent points that I wholeheartedly applaud. I often wonder what's going to happen when the violent expansion finally eclipses the number of students they can attract to the school.
Sorry to intrude, but it's nice to see another resident of the area feeling the same way I did. ^_^
Yeah, my top choices were actually Taylor and Huntington. But my tuition is fully covered at IWU, so I really didn't have much of a choice.
I'm a non-denominational Christian, and so the whole John Wesley thing seems unneccessary. Sure, he was a great man and did a lot for Christianity. But there are times where I feel the university wants us to worship him more than Christ.
IWU has been great for Marion, I can't deny that. But I feel like IWU is focused more on helping Marion rather than helping educate students. I feel that the college has developed WAY too fast. I don't think they necessarily had the best interests of the students in mind. I think most students would like to have a smaller, close-knit atmosphere where students and profs alike can know each other. Like the saying goes: "what goes up must come down." I just wonder if the administration has taken that into consideration.
Thanks for the post! Glad to know there's someone else out there who has noticed these things.
Well, maybe not, but I know EXACTLY how you feel. I'm a junior at IWU, and sick to death of the place right now. That is a long convoluted rant in and of itself, but essentially, the whole "I know what's better for you because I'm older than you, so let me make all of your choices for you" mentality makes me sick. I'm twenty years old, give me a break! I'd like to make my OWN choices, thankyouverymuch.
I'm flattered by your proposal, but I'm not sure my girlfriend would approve. :)
I think the intentions behind IWU's many rules are good, but there are definitely some issues that they should lighten up on. Rated-R movies and dancing are the first two that come to mind. I would hope people would have enough common sense and decency to know that horny teen movies with mass profanity are not going to benefit them spiritually. Along the same lines, I would hope they would know "provocative" dancing isn't going to bring them closer to Christ.
But I don't think student development should get its hand into everything...not everyone wants "big brother" after them constantly. Maybe that's just my Republican nature coming through. The folks at student development are not perfect. They should be there to help guide us through this time in our lives rather than dishing out discipline to those who playfully dance in the hallway and watch Office Space.
Barnes is on record as saying there will be no dancing as long as he is president. Which makes sense, it might piss off the alumni, and pissed alumni = less money = fewer dorms = less recruitment. *eyeroll* Yeah, well, here's one alumna who'd LOVE to see some change. They're not getting a cent of my money until I see some worthwhile changes being made - preferably a reduction in the suffocating, poisonous atmosphere of "Get married and breed now or you'll die an old maid."
And common sense and decency are rarer at IWU than you'd expect.
And student development is an enormous joke. "Keeping young adults in a happy pretty non-real-world protective bubble" does not equal "fostering the development of good judgement and healthy persevering sprituality."

That's remarkably, frighteningly how I felt; that's so much of why I was delighted to graduate from there in three years.
May I link to this entry in my journal?

Sorry for the rant.
