Lipton was generally very careful not to form relationships with people that he didn't like. Unless it couldn't be avoided, a nod and a neutral expression had gotten him a long way in the past in terms of skirting conflict. Jane Bennet was on Guy's mind. The poor woman crying, having removed herself from the man she had admitted she loved. A scene for book, but this (no matter what one thought of the island) was real. Jane had cried, she had been hurt, and he was determined to do seomthing about it. She was on his mind. But then again, a great many things were on his mind and he couldn't be expected to do everything at once.

So he hadn't exactly gone out of his way to find him, but when Carwood Lipton looked up, he was not met with a grin and a 'hullo' or a 'good morning to you, old chum', but with a "You fuck-arse," spoken conversationally, matter-of-factly, without raising his voice. "You utter twat."

Lipton just looked back at Guy steadily, his face devoid of any reaction to the unconventional greeting. It had only been a matter of time, really, before someone realized that this was all his fault, that he was the one who carried all the blame in this chaotic jumble of love and friendship and avoidance.

"Hello, Guy." Might as well get his over with. "Go on, then."

Lipton resumed the coffee-making process, absolutely certain that nothing he could say could mollify Guy.

"If you're so well-informed, than you know what I have to say already."
