The closer I get to oz, the more mundane everything seems, the adventure is fading as things become easier to deal with; society's comfort bubble. Malaysia and singapore seem to be the bridge to the west

With Malaysia and Singapore... correct me if I'm wrong but before the rest of us came along they were mostly just small fishing tribes, weren't they? If so, they aren't going to have a terrible lot of culture and food to call their own... At least, not until you start talking to the natives...
