Nick, I'm sure you're a brilliant guy and this has probably occured to you before...but its worth another shot. Perhaps the problem with people is actually your perception of them. Now, the punks who you work with, I'm sure their problem is surely immaturity but maybe you could change your perspective about other people. Like, instead of being suspicious or automatically assuming you won't like someone or someone won't like you, try to smile. At the very least, it will catch them offguard, judging from the "angry military guy" character you've built for yourself
