Clear Climate Code

Dec 03, 2009 11:06

It's taken us about a year to pull our collective fingers out, but here is the Clear Climate Code website. The code is in GoogleCode, and there's also a mailing list.

"Our goals are:

To increase public confidence in climate science results"

Best of luck with that Nick. I try my best on various forums that I contribute to, but it's an uphill struggle.

It's a struggle, but we (i.e. the reality-based community, collectively) have definitely made progress in the last ten years.

I wish I could be so optimistic about it - but the sheer volume of crap that gets spewed out into the public domain by the denialist side and stays there is depressing. I have a back and forth with people on the net almost every few weeks and the rubbish is the same:

"The science isn't settled"

"Isn't it funny they stopped calling it 'global warming' and switched to 'climate change"

"Temperature rises always precede CO2 rises"

"They faked it!!!"

Even when you explain the science and the workings of the scientific process they just dredge up another denialist point and it goes nowhere.

And as for the 'fakery' point above, i.e. SwiftHack (aka Climategate) - I fear it will have, at least, a short term impact on moves to mitigate climate change. The BBC is reporting that the lead Saudi climate negotiator is saying this:

"It appears from the details of the scandal that there is no relationship whatsoever between human activities and climate change ( ... )

Thank you! I think I may have found you at least one volunteer who can actually code. (Either that, or sharply discomfited a lazy scoffer. It's all good.)

I fear I might have let my mouth run away with me there.

Yeah, never mud-wrestle a pig. You both get dirty, and the pig likes it.

Asking the pig to help you do the dishes, with a happy and expectant smile, is much more effective all around.

Well, I did ask nicely.
It went wrong after that.

Congratulations for getting this off the ground pro bono in the current economic conditions.

These conditions make it easier to persuade people to spend time on this. It's either that or Minesweeper.

You mean we can do Minesweeper pro bono? (Most I've ever seen it played was at a certain now defunct software company. As far as I could tell, they were being paid to play it.)
