I think it's obvious that Hellboy is The Elephant Man, aka Joseph Merrick, in disguise. Most superheroes have secret identities, so why should Hellboy be any different? I'd like to draw your attention to the Elephant Man's glaring lack of toolbelt. This alone could discredit your theory. How can you fight that? Recant, I say, or I'm taking it public!

when they checked him into the hospital because they mistook him for a circus freak, they confiscated his tool belt to make sure he wouldn't use it to hang himself. He stole it back, of course, before he snuck away (to save the world, duh).

Joseph was made to take off his toolbelt for the photo...Most likely because his toolbelt was so large *cough cough* that it would take away from the scientific analysis on which they were trying to focus...I'm with Nick...Kudos!
