Good News, Bad News

Well it's mostly good news really, but I thought that'd grab your attention more.

The new £20 is out today, it's been a rather quiet launch, with only the BBC covering the story much in advance.  This was actually the intention though, rather than trying to peddle it to the media for weeks, it was decided it would be better to let it hit the ( Read more... )

I only heard about this once on BBC news early this morning Nick. There seems to have been lots of debate since as to why they picked a Scottish guy. Not that I'm bothered who's on the back to be honest but, oh well.

Was covered by all BBC news sources, as well as

FT - paper copy

The Guardian: http://business.guardian.co.uk/story/0,,2032707,00.html

The Sun http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2005300000-2007120002,00.html

I had a list at work, but I've forgotten quite a few of them. There were queues at the cash points on the way back from work though, which was quite funny!

I don't understand why there is so much debate, I guess it's because we're called the Bank of England, but we're the central bank of the UK so a Scott has as much of a right to be on their as anyone else. The fact that most of the UK doesn't know that Adam Smith essentially invented economics, and therefore defined the world we live in, perhaps suggests that we're a nation rather ignorant of our own achievements.

Maybe having him on the note will encourage people to look him up and learn about what he's done.

I haven't really followed the debate to be honest. I suppose there are those who could say we already have a Bank Of Scotland that produces Scottish notes with Scottish themes so why shouldn't a Bank of England note have English themes. However, I don't really know a great deal about it so I'll leave that debate for the experts.

Frank Field's parliamentary secretary, Ben, was in my class at school and sixth form. I really admire him - he's done brilliantly.
