One of those ruts in which things I say don't make sense to myself or others, words trip out wrong, travel in the opposite direction. I say three things when I should have said two, two when I should have said none.

The tidy, innocuous example: the waitress says and I reply -

- How are you doing today?
- Oh, great thanks, you too.

So used to saying Thanks to my patrons, I ended a conversation in the grocery with Thank You instead of Good-bye. Felt like a fool!

i feel as you did reading nabokov every time i think maybe i'm writing something that might be a poem -- i am not in the same universe with the greats. but if you're learnin' to talk, then it'll be worth reading. i know it for a fact.
