I've been seeing this going around again. 2012 was not a great year for me, and I can totally see that reflected in my podfic output. I didn't record much, and most of what I did record was very short. I began multiple projects that I never finished, including my podficbigbang. I have high hopes for 2013, though.
Okay,here goes:
Stats 19 podfics recorded, for a total of 3 hours and 59 minutes, or an average of 11.32 minutes per podfic. Which means I had a few that were around a half an hour, and a lot more that were closer to 3 minutes.
In contrast, in 2011 I recorded 30 podfics, for a total of 7 hours. I'm hoping 2013 will be more like 2011 in that regard.
Here's how it broke down by fandom:
3 Supernatural
2 Star Trek AOS
2 Vorkosigan Saga
1.5 Criminal Minds (one was a crossover)
0.5 Fringe (that's the crossover)
1 each in Harry Potter, Firefly, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Veronica Mars, Friday Night Lights, Bas Lag (China Mieville), Parks & Recreation, Twin Peaks, and Brick.
And by type:
8 f/f
7 gen
2 m/m
2 m/f
What was the best podfic you made this year This was a low productivity year for me, but there were actually several podfics that I was really proud of. The best was probably
Groundhog Day, though. I experimented with that one in more ways than one, and I really like the way it turned out.
Most popular
Groundhog Day. Easily. Which is pretty satisfying, actually.
Most under appreciated
bright yellow sky. It's a beautiful story and I feel pretty good about how my work with it turned out, but I'm not sure anyone ever listened to it.
Personal favorite, for whatever reason
Sunshine on Leith. I love Gaila/Uhura in general, and I really loved Gaila's perspective in this story. I'm also really fond of
Mexicali Blues. Both podfics were auction wins. Mexicali Blues had been on my to-record list, but Sunshine on Leith was new to me. I adore both fics, and I'm really grateful I got the opportunity/excuse to make these podfics.
Most difficult to make
and did you tell billy you loved him? did you say, 'billy, i love you'? I am just not an animated reader. I can do quiet, deadpan funny, but not enthusiastic, noisy funny.
Most "ah ha ha I can't believe I'm doing this"
Groundhog Day. My first attempt at recording anything explicit, and naturally I started with Wincest. It was fun, though. Odds are pretty good I'll do it again if the right fic comes along.
Most fun to make
The One You'll Know By. I really enjoy reading John Winchester. I don't know why I don't do it more often.
Was there one that didn't turn out the way you wanted
and did you tell billy you loved him? did you say, 'billy, i love you'? Again, as much as I loved the story, I just can't read in that style. I also don't think I did justice to
Waffles and Lemonade.
Biggest learning experience I'm not sure which podfic qualifies here. I guess Groundhog Day. But I think my biggest learning experience in the general podfic arena was co-modding KISSES II with the lovely
cantarina1 ver at
audiofemme. I took a more active role this year than I did the previous year, and I really enjoyed it. Doing that gave me the confidence to host the podfic listening party at
wincon, which was also a pretty big learning experience (and a lot of fun).
What's next? Do you have any podfic goals for next year Yes! Every single one of my goals from last year still applies. 1) Doing more with
audiofemme (formerly
podfic_project). 2) Finally getting
smallfandompods off the ground. 3) Finishing one or both of my leviathan (100k+ word) podfics. Particularly the one that I recorded for podficbigbang in 2012, but never finished editing. (It needs some rerecording, too.) 4) Commenting and reccing a whole lot more. 5) Getting a handle on making cover art. I still have no idea what I'm doing there.
I also just want to make a lot more podfic than I did in 2012. Particularly in Supernatural and Star Trek AOS, but also in the small fandoms I love so much. I think making more in bigger fandoms is necessary for me to sustain the effort in the smaller fandoms, though
Podfic Things I'm Proud Of Putting together the
Peck on the Lips II anthology for KISSES fest, and hosting the podfic listening party at
wincon. I've been having a particularly un-social year in fandom and in life, and doing these projects was good for me. I hope to do more things along these lines in 2013.
