Good Samaritan Sunday

So as I was sitting in church this morning I decided, God's probably pretty pissed at how much Bible's cost. I mean, if you think about it, we should really be handing them out for free. I've seen em' at the dollar store, while finding the same exact one in Target for $8. I understand that maybe $8 isn't a lot of money, but if the whole point is to ( Read more... )

There are those days that just drive us all to drink for no real reason. It just happens...

what about gideon bibles?

i've always had two minds on this - i kind of like having a formal bible that i respect and keep special as it feels right to do so. but then again, i also think that having one that is battered and tatty and used and cheap is far more practical and that's what the bible should be about really. far better to have one that's used and shows it - my little pocket bible has been through years of abuse on beach missions and the like yet still stays together so probably that's a good sign!

oh this is a british thing

http://www.ubm.org.uk/newsite/index.html

old fashioned as anything (use new king james or AV as default bibles, don't let women do a thing, half expect women to wear head covering to pray etc etc) but they do a very good job and i spent a happy ten years doing it up until a couple of years ago when me and god started having "issues"

I'm sorry about the issues between you and God. I can relate to that. I think at some point, having the issues is important, because it provides you with the opportunity to maybe become stronger in your faith, depending on how they're dealt with...yeah, I'm still working on it. :O) Thanks for the link...it seems that it would be a good experience.

And then there's the other side of it... terpsquared July 26 2004, 14:13:14 UTC
Ned: At times like these, I used to turn to the Bible and find solace, but even the Good Book can't help me now.
Homer: Why not?
Ned: I sold it to you for seven cents.

On another note, I agree on the Ricky Williams thing. Good for him. I'm disappointed that on the sports boards I read, only about 30% of the people agree with what he's done, and a lot feel it's just an excuse for him to toke up. I do hope that he's doing this moreso because he's enlightened as to the value of a simple life, rather than in reaction to some sort of trauma of being attention flypaper.

From what I understand, he very much detested the spot light, the "rock star lifestyle" he called it. It's been said that he want's to do something bigger with his life...with the connotation that bigger meant something with more purpose or...if I read into that wrong, I don't want to know about it. Believing that an athlete would give up the money and fame based upon wanting to do something bigger than himself, gives me some hope. :O)

I got a bible with my name engraved on it for graduating 8th grade. The highlight of it all was going out for Ice Cream.

I got a nice Bible when I was confirmed, I just don't see the spiritual justification for it's hefty price tag.

It both the Catholic and Lutheran church kids, around 10 years old or so, go through a two-year education of the Bible, the religion, the sacraments, etc. At the end of those two years, they "graduate" or get confirmed. In the Lutheran church, you can't partake in communion unless you've been confirmed. I think, though I'm not sure, that in the Catholic church, one can actually have their first communion before being confirmed...don't quote me on that though...that last time I was Catholic I wasn't, so I don't remember much. :O)
