They Might Be Giants is an awesome live band. I love their random quirkiness/quirky randomness. They even played Fingertips!
TMBG had a cool little idea called Dial-A-Song where they bought a local manhattan phone line and put a touch-tone answering machine on the other end. Basically, you could listen to snippets of incomplete songs and musical ideas the band had and leave feedback etc. It was just stuff the band was playing around with. But then they decided one day in the studio to play the Dial-A-Song snippets straight through as one song. Imagine lots of starts and stops and transitions and incoherent lyrics in a single musical piece that somehow works as a whole. Its really quite cool, and something more suited to the studio than a live set. Which is why I'm happy they played it.
Details: They played at the Catalyst in downtown Santa Cruz. It was Jen's first concert!! Mr. L drove and Kamilla came too...very cool because I didn't have to drive.
I love small club concerts because they're so intimate.
They've also been playing together since 1982. That is just crazy.
