Why don't people like Ginny Weasley? I have NEVER understood the fandom hate towards her, and I'm just curious if anyone here feels they know the answer and would like to explain it to me...

what, for siriusly, very important issues

I don't get it either. I mean, she's not my favorite or anything, but I don't see what there is to hate. She's a nice, plucky girl. Plus, she's a Weasley; that's insta-like right there.

I always assumed that it's linked to people hating whatever gets in the way of their ships? If you're a Harry/Hermione or Harry/Draco or Harry/whatever shipper, you hate Ginny because he canonically likes her. I have found this in fandoms where there are characters that have multiple very popular non-canon ships. For example, when I was in Heroes fandom years ago, all the Mohinder/Sylar fans hated Matt because Matt/Mohinder was a big fandom. And all the people who shipped Sylar and/or Mohinder with anyone loathed Maya because she made out with both of them.

I disliked Maya because she was irritating lol.

I'm such a shipper whore in the 'Harry Potter' fandom, but weirdly enough only ship Harry and Ginny with eachother. I can abstractly understand the hate from the Harry/Hermione camp (which I'm glad I was never a part of, if only purely so I didn't have to suffer through yet another ship sinking), as I am still shipping pairings where I don't like the third option - but that's usually because I don't like said character, rather than just hating on the other person because they were there ( ... )

I would like to know this as well. Ginny is my favorite character and it kills me that she gets so much hate all the time.

Plus, Bonnie Wright is SO BEAUTIFUL. They didn't characterize Ginny as well as I'd have liked them to, in the movies, but Bonnie grew up so lovely, I sort of didn't mind too much.

But yeah, who can hate Ginny? She's wonderful.

I know, she is so pretty - mostly in real life though. I think if they would have made Ginny look like Bonnie Wright, it would have been loads better (i.e. not the pin straight hair). And yeah, Ginny's characterization in the movies was way off base, but so was like every other character haha - I mean, Harry and Ron barely ever interacted, and yet they're supposed to be best friends...

Oh movies. Since I've been watching 'Game of Thrones', I've gotten it into my head about how AMAZING 'Harry Potter' would have been as a television show on HBO or something. (HBO purely so they could have a bigger budget. Though a MA 'Harry Potter' show would be interesting, haha).

In my personal experience, a lot of people call her a Mary Sue, which is weird because I wouldn't classify any JKR character as a Mary Sue. A lot of people aren't convinced of Harry/Ginny chemistry in the books, others were irritated that JKR did something as "predictable" as have Harry marry into the Weasley family, but whatever. I stan Ginny of the books and I've had this debate on and off for the last five or so years with the crazies.

BUT, I have to agree with the people who can't ship Harry/Ginny in the movies, because Dan and Bonnie seemed to have negative chemistry. And the people who hate movie!Ginny have a lot of ammo too, because she was not written very well for movies 5-7.

I basically agree with all of this. Honestly, Ginny is one of my favorite characters - mostly because she's the one character I feel I have the most in common with...so I guess I'm my favorite? In a non-egotistical way though :P ( ... )
