Max suppressed a scream as white powder flew up at her face and set her eyes on fire.

“Max.” Logan couldn’t seem to completely keep the laughter out of his voice. “Here, let me help you.”

She wiped the flour from her still stinging eyes. “No!” It took all of her willpower not to stomp her foot. “I said I was going to make you a cake and I’m going to do it.”

He gave her a lopsided grin. “Yes, but will my kitchen still be intact when you’re finished?”

“Very funny.”

Logan wheeled over to the sink and wetted a wash cloth. “Take this. Not that pasty white doesn’t look good on you,” he was still grinning like an idiot. And the worst part was she thought it was cute, she couldn‘t even get mad at him when it was convenient. She snatched the rag from his hand and wiped her face a little harder than necessary.

“Better?” She tried to sound annoyed and failed.

“Perfect.” There was that damn smile again.

She ignored her hormones and said, “Now where are the eggs?”

“Ummm...Max.” His eyes were focused on her feet. Which were covered in yellow gunk.

“Dammit! I must have knocked them over when the flour attacked me,” she grumbled.

Logan just stared at her, his eyes filled with warmth.

“I’m sorry Logan. I’m such a screw up. I can’t even follow a simple recipe. Give me a Manticore soldier and I’ll kick him into next Tuesday, but baking kicks my ass.”

“Max you aren’t a screw up...you just can’t cook.”

She laughed.

“Really, it’s refreshing that there is something I’m actually better at than you.”

“No arguments here,” she held up her hands in defeat. “You are the better house wife.”

“Ha Ha.”

“Kidding.”

“I do appreciate the gesture. It has been a long time since anyone’s offered to cook for me,” his voice sounded far away, sad.

Max suddenly had the urge to sit in his lap and tickle the hell out of him. He would probably freak out, but then again, maybe he wouldn’t.

“Hey Logan.”

He looked up at her.

“I’m tired.”

“I can only imag-”

Then she went in for the kill. She slinked onto his lap, he tensed slightly but didn’t protest. Max decided against the tickling and went straight to the cuddling. She rested her head on his shoulder and realized she really was tired. Failing at baking really took a lot out of a girl.

“You’re right Logan, I’ll leave the cooking to you. One round with a bag of flour and I’m down for the count.”

She felt his arms slide around her. “I’m not complaining.”

She lifted her head and met his gaze, she smiled.

A grin erupted on Logan’s face. “You still have a bit of flour,” he kissed her nose. “There.”

“Oh no. Well you better get it off then.” A part of her wished he’d start kissing the crap out of her, another part was scared to death he would.

“Nah. I like it. It’s cute.”

She relaxed, he always knew just the right thing to say. “Cute. I am not cute.” She countered.

“Okay, sexy.”

“Better.” She snuggled closer. Her eyes started to feel heavy.

“You want to try this again...cookies are simpler.”

“No. I’m happy where I am.” She said groggily.

“Me too.” He whispered, his lips brushing her forehead.

The last thing Max remembered that night was the feel of Logan’s hands running though her hair while she feel asleep to the sound of his heart beating.
