While I DID try to finish a third one before the deadline, I wasn't able to. However for the first time I DID get a silly treat and a gift vid completed.

So this is a vid in my LONG festivids tradition of matching on one thing and finding myself vidding a completely different thing - not out of lack of inspiration for the match (which I *believe* was Beethoven), but way too much inspiration for something else.
"Girl" is a movie that I'd never seen before, and yet jumped out at me from
violace's festivid letter - maybe it was the awkward '90s marketing that plainly had nothing to do with the movie's actual plot ("a mix of Clueless and She's All That" WHAT) or simply the promise that it involved a girl infatuated with an alternative rock star. You can actually
watch the full movie on YouTube; it's clunky in a lot of places and not exactly a cinematic masterpiece. :) But I was drawn to something about it and the main character of Andrea. As
violace described it: It's about obsessions, but also being passionate, being a fan, being in love. It's about self discovery, finding what makes you happy, and doing the right thing for yourself. I immediately latched onto wanting to do something with the song "Celluloid Heroes", which is all about the idolization of celebrity figures and the sadder truths under that fantasy. The movie never slut-shames Andrea for becoming a groupie, but she grows from obsessing and idealizing over someone who doesn't really deserve it, to being shaken back to reality, and ultimately finding in *herself* what she had admired in others, to begin seeing herself as the hero of her own story. That's the narrative I wanted to showcase here.
There were some kinks (heh) in my vid plan, however. Fun fact! The version of the movie I linked to on YouTube is not ONLY super low quality but also full of aspect ratio issues and about a third of it is inexplicably ripped off the Lifetime Movie Channel complete with ads and logo at the bottom of the screen. Oh, and "Celluloid Heroes" is a 6+ minute song that I'd have to cut down. Early on, I imported the song and crappy Youtube rip into Premiere primarily to prove to myself I couldn't do this vid. The next thing I knew, I had shortened the audio and had the entire last 40 seconds of it on the timeline. What began as a THIS'LL TEACH *ME* FOR MY HUBRIS HAHAHAHA almost instantly became "well shit, where do I get a better version of this?" Through twitter I was hooked up with an *ahem* source I hadn't used previously and my heart almost burst when I saw it was available. I downloaded it.
It was the same damn rip from Youtube with the randomly appearing Lifetime logo.
...Reader, I bought a used DVD on Amazon with credit card rewards money.

"Rick and Morty" is an Adult Swim cartoon I never really expected to like -- in fact I remember seeing the first commercials for it and thinking they were really dark and off-putting. But I got a little more interested when I found out Dan Harmon's involvement (of Community fame), gave a chance to a random episode (I believe it was "Rick Potion #9"), and it was... dark and off-putting and also delightful? I ended up marathoning the whole season and NOMINATING it as a festivid fandom, but didn't have space to request myself, so I was really excited to see someone else picked it up and right away wanted to treat it.
This Book of Mormon song has been with me for a while as a great potential vid for a certain type of two-character relationship -- with one member clearly more dominating/self-centered and the other just haplessly along for the ride. Enter Rick & Morty, basically a parody of Back to the Future with some Doctor Who thrown in - if the brilliant, adventuring genius character was also a drunk, narcissistic asshole dragging his easily impressed and easily traumatized grandson around on adventures that usually end with a body count or full-on apocalypse. (So not THAT far off from Doctor Who, really.)
There's not really much a deeper narrative here, though I did like using the softer moments in the song to play with some of the cute/heartfelt moments between them, especially that little bit of Rick tearing up at Baby Morty in his memories. :..) And also getting some moments in where Morty stands up to Rick.
