I don't know the exact time. I think they told me something like 6 weeks years ago when I got mine done. A good way to go is when you can turn the ring without getting crust on it then you know it's healed and you can change it. It's awful odd to be that a professional did it with a barbell. I was told you were supposed to start out with a hoop so you can turn it back and forth when cleaning it.
I always just used Dial Antibacterial liquid soap to clean mine and usually only cleaned it in the shower. I didn't use salt water or asprin till I got a weird bump on it but that went away. I haven't had any problems with it since the initial healing. I got it done when I was 16 so that's almost 7 years ago now.
i couldn't get peirced with a hoop, the only hoops they had were the regular hoops, and last time i got pierced with that i got a really bad infection, so i got them to pierce it with a titanium barbell
same thing happened to me when i got mine pierced with a hoop. then i went to smooth groove and they changed it out with a barbell and all was well after that.
i wanna get mine pierced on my birthday. and i highly doubt that what those guys tell you is true. out of all my friends that have gotten their navels pierced, none of them have had a major problem.
