this prompt on exopromptmeme. Parents' Evenings are always such a lot of fun, aren't they?
Childcare wasn’t a profession you could progress very far in if you didn’t enjoy what you did, mostly because if you didn't have the right mindset there was a real chance you might be driven irrevocably insane. It was lucky for Minseok then that he honestly loved his job and couldn't possibly imagine doing anything else. Sometimes though he couldn’t help thinking that if he'd followed his father into a career in medicine he would be leading a far less stressful life. Now was one of those times. He gestured for his dependable if at times completely apathetic classroom assistant to get up from the circle area and come over to where he was standing by the coat pegs. “So I finally got through to Yixing.” He told him once he'd joined him.
Sehun sighed. Pick-up was supposed to have been between quarter-to four and four pm, the clock read ten past. He glanced over his shoulder at the two children he’d left on the rug before turning his attention back to Minseok. The boys were so engrossed in trying to solve the alphabet floor puzzle he’d shoved in front of them they hadn't even looked up when he'd left so he was pretty sure they wouldn't be overheard. “Let me guess, he stopped off to get the twins a snack but he’s on his way so we’ve not to worry.”
It was a logical guess, it was the same excuse the twins’ father had given the last two times he’d been late picking them up after all. Sadly though it was not the excuse that had been given this time. “No, he thought it was Wednesday and Junmyeon was on his way get them.”
Sehun did not look impressed by this news in the slightest. “That’s ridiculous. 'Today is Thursday’ is written on the welcome board in letters a meter tall.”
The younger man had a point even if a meter tall had been a slight exaggeration. The noticeboard was the first thing you saw when you entered the building and the ‘Today is Thursday, the weather is cold and cloudy’ stuck slap bang in the middle was pretty hard to miss. It was Yixing they were talking about though so they really shouldn’t be so surprised. He was the kind of parent you had to write everything down twice for and then have to bail out when he still managed to forget his kids swimming things or failed to send in a packed lunch on a day they had an outing planned. “Yeah well, he got mixed up regardless which means we’re stuck with Yeongseok and Yeongjun for another thirty minutes at least.”
“Well that's just fantastic. Parents’ Evening is in less than an hour and we’re not even halfway ready. There’s the food and drink to prepare, the chairs to bring in from the hall…”
“I know.” Minseok said, deciding to cut Sehun off before he could launch into a full-blown rant. He was right they still had a huge amount to do but that meant they really didn't have the time to complain. “There’s nothing we can do about it though so why don’t you go back and sit with the twins, keep them occupied and I’ll start bringing the things in from the kitchen.”
“Why do I have to sit with the twins? You’re their teacher, shouldn't occupying them be your job?”
“You're right, I am their teacher which makes me your boss. And anyway you owe me one. Today I had to tell Mrs Lee why her daughter looks like she’s been mauled by a cat when I wasn’t even the one who dealt with incident, all because you chickened out. She was not happy." And that was putting it mildly, at one point Minseok had half expected steam to start pouring from her ears.
“I had to help Sanghyun in the bathroom!” Sehun protested, clearly affronted.
Minseok snorted. Did he really think he was that unobservant? “Don’t think I didn’t see you go over and ask him if he needed the toilet as soon as you saw her walk past the window.” He’d been teaching five year olds for over two years now, worked with them for nearly six, he’d long ago developed eyes on the back of his head.
Unsurprisingly Sehun refused to give in. “He looked like he needed to go, I was preventing an accident.” He said in a bid to defend himself.
There was no point arguing with him Minseok thought. There was no way Sehun was going to admit to being afraid of Hyeonji’s diminutive mother. "Of course you were." He said instead then he looked over at Yeongseok who was still moving puzzle pieces around on the carpet with an expression of extreme concentration on his face. With his wide eyes and mop of unruly brown hair he looked positively adorable. It was hard to imagine him trying to scratch someone’s face off for having the audacity to take the last piece of toast at snack time but then appearances could be deceiving, couldn't they? “I’m not telling his parents.” Minseok said with a shake of his head. “You saw it, so you're telling them.” Last time he’d had to tell them that one of their sons had launched themselves at another child (Yeongjun had just as much trouble when it came to sharing as his brother and had attempted to yank a handful of Eunkyung’s hair out when she’d plucked a felt pen out of his hands) Yixing’s heartfelt apology had lasted at least ten minutes if not longer and Junmyeon’s embarrassment had been physically palpable. There was no way Minseok was going through that again if he didn’t have to.
