Summary: Because even after 17 years, they'd still be the same.
Note: A little something for Arashi's 17th anniversary tomorrow! 5x17! This came from the prompt "Write about three people walking on a bridge at the beginning" but I did it with a little twist. Lmao.
"Say, do you think we'd still be like this in the future, when we're all grown up?"
Kazunari kept staring at the male students from a school not so far away from theirs, mess around at the side of the bridge they were currently walking on; he fidgeted with his housekeys inside of his pants pocket, melancholy suddenly enveloping him. He didn't answer because he didn't want to jinx anything, but thankfully, Sho answered Masaki's question.
"Yeah, I'm sure we'd still be like this."
"Even with that hair of yours, Sho-san?" he finally chimed in, averting his eyes from the sight just then, and causing the three of them to laugh. Sho then replied, using a tough tone of voice, that he'd surely pull off his current hairstyle-that being a long blonde hair with weird streaks of brown at the side-even in the future. Kazunari and Masaki met gazes, then teasing smiles before turning away from Sho, causing the latter to let out a few grumbles of incoherent words here and there. He was sure it weren't nice words, though.
"What about you, Nino? Do you also think so? Because I do!"
He could feel his friend's gaze on him as they continued walking, so when he finally managed to muster up his courage, he looked back.
"Hey guys, wait up!"
The three of them came to a half then turned to face the last two members of their so-called "gang" (as Masaki had started calling them one day) Jun and Satoshi ran to catch up with them, and when they eventually did, they were both a panting mess, considering that the other three were almost at the other end of the bridge.
"What took you so long?" Kazunari asked, then smirked when Satoshi motioned for him to wait as he continued to catch his breath. Jun was the one who answered, saying that they had to finish with their drama and art club meetings.
Soon, the four of them stood there, staring out at the river in front of them. Masaki joined in again a few minutes later, passing over cans of softdrinks to his friends. They talked about their week individually (one of the struggles of being friends put into different classes) Jun broke up with his girlfriend at the start of the week since he needed to focus on his studies to get into a good college; Satoshi went fishing with his uncle on Wednesday; Sho told them that he and his parents had an argument the other day over his education.
Kazunari looked down at his can of softdrink as Masaki, the only member of their "gang" he was put in the same class with, talked about his week. He thought back to the fun they've lal had over the past few years, having gone to the same middle school and even up to high school; it made him feel a wave of emotions. And when it was his turn, he just looked at Masaki who stood beside him, and then said: "I do think we'd still be like this."
Masaki grinned while the others teased him for being so sentimental so suddenly; he merely shrugged it off and continued drinking his beverage. They all spent that Friday night hanging out, teasing each other and laughing their heads off, because it was only a few more weeks until finals, entrance exams for colleges, and preparations for graduation day. And they all needed to have that moment of "freedom".
"Man, I'm tired,"
Kazunari turned his attention from the small children playing with their parents at the side of the bridge to look at the man beside him. The corner of his lips twitched up to a smirk as he heard Sho tease Masaki that he shouldn't have come if he was that tired.
"Hey, it's been so long since we last met! I'm all up for this!"
He can't help but chuckle, and soon enough he, Masaki and Sho were laughing as they walked along the usual bridge. The sun was coming down, and it was starting to feel cold as the month of September kicks in, but thankfully it was a Friday, so he doesn't have to worry about work the following day. The three of them stopped laughing when they heard voices calling out in the distance.
"Late as always, you two!" Sho said, though he was smiling at them as they approached. He was right though, Jun and Satoshi were always late, especially now that the both of them have become well-known artists, in the arts of painting and theater.
"Saw a billboard for your new play, you looked awesome as always, MatsuJun!" Masaki gentled nudged the youngest of their "gang" (as Masaki would still call them) on the shoulder, making Jun flush.
"Hey, Oh-chan, when does your next exhibit open?" asked Kazunari as he fidgeted with the keys to his apartment inside his pocket. Satoshi answered, saying that it'll open next week, and that if everyone was free, he's more than glad to show them around himself.
"Free admission, no worries," Satoshi added, causing them all to laugh. Kazunari's comment "Well it better be, we're VIPs, you know?" made the laughter double, causing a few teenagers to look their way. And in the back of his head, he imagined his younger self probably doing the same, if he saw ment in their thirties laughing at a bridge. But at the moment, he didn't care, because the laughter he shared with his best friends made him feel like a teenager again.
And as night came, they all stood at their usual spot at the usual bridge, staring out at the river as they talked about their jobs and lives. Masaki joined moments later, passing over cans of beer to everyone, and then yelling out that it was time for their "individual stories".
"But we just talked about that!" said Sho.
"I was away!" Masaki narrowed his eyes at him, and then started giggling when Jun made a teasing comment about his eyes getting way smaller.
In the end, they all started to talk about their lives: Jun was busy with his theater plays, but promised them that he'd make it to Satoshi's exhibit next week when he returns from Boston; Satoshi was, obviously, busy with his fifth ("That's amazing, Oh-chan!" exclaimed Masaki.) exhibit that opens next week, and was already working on his next paintings; Sho, who once struggled with how his parents wanted him to turn out, graduated from a well-known university, and was now busy being the CEO of his own company; Masaki, who started out being a gym instructor as a part-time job, was now, surprisingly, a professor ("I still can't believe you're a professor," said Kazunari, causing everyone to laugh.) in graphic design at an art university, When it came to his turn, Kazunari took a deep breath at first, and then started telling-more like ranting-about his job being a video game designer for one of the well-known companies in the gaming industry. The reason why he was pissed though, was because his recently hired assistant was not helping at all with his work. And Kazunari merely rolled his eyes when everyone started teasing him by acting surprised at how serious he can be.
He pushed a still laughing Masaki, causing Satoshi to almost drop his can of beer. Then all of them were laughing again.
"I can get you someone from my company, if you want," said Sho.
A smile was on his face, but he shook his head. They all went back to talking and laughing at totally random stuff: from their ex-girlfriends, families, and even their "wild" college lives back then. And as they got quiet, Kazunari broke the silence by asking Sho about his hair.
"Yeah, what happened to that?I remember you telling us so many times back then, that you'd still have it by the time you got old!" added Jun.
Sho scratched his cheek, "Well... Hey! I can still pull that off at this age, you know?!" he retorted when Kazunari kept staring at him with a teasing gaze.
The night went on like that, with the five of them drinking beer at a bridge, catching up with each other and laughing. When the night ended around 2 AM, and Jun, Satoshi and Sho went the other way, Kazunari, who was walking with Masaki, tugged on his friend's sweater, causing the latter to respond with a grunt as they kept walking.
"Looks like we did stay like this, Aibasshi," he said, a smile appearing on his face. Masaki returned it, looking all proud before responding:
"Told you so."
