Kazunari pocketed his phone then left his apartment, birthday gift in hand. It was a very simple present: a keychain, which he took the time and effort to put in a separate box and wrap-sloppily, with green wrapping paper-by himself. When he stared at the small box in his hand, he can't help but feel surprised himself. It was quite rare for him to actually buy something as a gift for Masaki, since they usually just eat out on Christmas Eve (It has been a tradition of theirs to do so) before separating to go to their own families. Sometimes he'd only wish him a Happy Birthday when the both of them are busy or had to be at their families' that day.
But then again, he had bought a few gifts for the man over the past few years. Still, for some reason, he was feeling jittery the whole taxi ride to Masaki's apartment. He kept checking his phone to see if there were any messages or see if the other had at least seen his message. Masaki must be busy cooking, he thought when he read his friend's last message to him. A small smile appeared on his face, Or probably burnt the food so he had to go out and buy something.
He arrived at Masaki's doorstep half an hour later, just before his watch indicated that it was 1 PM. There weren't any burnt smell around the place, which was a good sign; the lights were off inside though, and the usual sound of Masaki's playlist can't be heard. Pushing aside his sudden worries, he pressed on the doorbell with his index finger; doing it again a few seconds later when he didn't hear the usual "Coming!" from Masaki.

After reading his messages, he let out a deep breath, hugging his coat closer for warmth. There weren't that much people around, just a few entering and exiting their own apartments. Some did look at him, probably wondering and snickering to themselves since he looked like he had just locked himself out of his apartment. He paid no mind to it. And after a little while more of just standing there with his back leaned against Masaki's door, he decided to go down and buy something hot from the vending machine; he returned with a can of coffee in one hand, patting his coat pocket to see if his present was still there before he cradled the beverage with both of his hands. Even the gloves can't protect him from the coldness that day.
He contemplates whether he should or shouldn't kill Masaki once he sees him. Being alone in the cold was not on his schedule that day.
"Did you lock yourself out?" an old man approached him, shifting his gaze from Kazunari to the door, then back at him again. He shook his head, moving away from his position at the door.
The man looked suspiciously at him, but continued, "Are you a friend of the tenant, then?"
Kazunari nodded, "He seems to be out," he said, then added. "but I can hear his TV when I stood by his window."
Sudden negative thoughts flooded his mind, but tried his best to ignore them by telling himself that Masaki's probably just out, buying food for the both of them. He just left his TV open. The old man's gaze wasn't helping though.
"I will open the door for you, boy. It's freezing out here," the man said before stepping closer to the door, pulling out a keyring, and then unlocking his friend's door for him and pushing it ajar (though it took a while for the man to find the right key).
"Thank you," he bowed. And with one last look, the man left.
He took off his coat, placing it over a chair and then walked around Masaki's apartment, checking if there were anything unusual with the place. But in the end, he just turned the TV off and slumped down on the couch before deciding to actually call the man. His head shot up when he heard Masaki's ringtone; standing up from the couch, he followed the ringing which lead to his bedroom. And when he opened the door, there he saw no other than Masaki, fast asleep on his bed, completely unaware of the ringing phone on the nightstand. Kazunari ended the call. "Idiot,"
Once beside Masaki's bed, he gently sat down near the edge of the bed. His heart was beating awfully faster by the minute. Kazunari then placed the small box on the nightstand, hesitating for a second before he lay down himself, beside his friend. He almost ran away when Masaki moved, though. Even so, it was impossible for him to move away since the man now had an arm around him, and was now holding him close.
"What took you so long?" Masaki's voice was hoarse, and it took a second for him to reply since the other snuggled closer to him; nuzzled on his hair even.
"That's sexual harassment, you know?" he replied, a crooked smile making its way to his face. He felt Masaki chuckle against his hair before pulling away, "You were awake the whole time?"
"Says the one who just snuck beside me while I was asleep." said Masaki. "Just woke up, actually. Your presence woke me up."
"Shut up," Kazunari sternly said, but spoke again in a softer tone of voice a few seconds of silence later, "...Happy birthday."
He heard Masaki mumble a thank you before gently squeezing him.
