For no apparent reason, people tend to fall asleep for long periods of time. The only difference between this and a real coma I suppose is the lack of injury.

Eventually people wake up. Sometimes with new memories.

Muraki thought it'd be fun to play up on the sightings of the Headless Horseman, so we found a easy enough patsy and convinced him that he saw a dead body.
