i'm trying to work out new ideas for paintings. i'm so over painting barns and rivers. how does someone paint an emotion without it being cliche or obvious? how do you paint that dark, heavy, ever consuming void of emptiness, loss, regret, and sadness that is inside the heart? how i can i paint something that i can hardly put into words? everyone ( Read more... )

I think you've given up to easily. Barns in rivers is the perfect iconology to describe the circumstances you describe. If you must depart from that, perhaps you need the abstractive approach. Take photos and clip images of things that share an inkling of what you're looking for. Assemble all media in a collage type pile. Then look for patterns that attach one item to another. Don't be afraid to artificially attach items. Like faces to lost bicycles, etc..

perhaps you're right and i should keep at it. at least it's painting as opposed to creating nothing because i'm stuck in a rut.
