Regarding copyright, roleplaying games are subject to it -- though you also need to consider what's just generally part of a roleplaying game. I recall there was a fair bit of hullabuloo when Wizards of the Coast reworked D&D, and released the underlying (d20) system as an open license that can be copied.

This one looks fairly thoroughly taken from the Amber rules -- between the description of the game, calling it "Eric Wujcik's Diceless Roleplaying", and having one of the contributors to Amber as the lead writer ... given that they are using Wujcik's name, I would anticipate that it is simply the Amber system dropped into a new setting ( ... )

The Amber setting rights have to be negotiated with Zelazny's estate (the ex-wife who hated him, and views the estate as a way to make money, hence the rights are costly).

The Amber DRPG rules, however, are currently controlled by Diceless By Design, a company with no products run by a couple guys from the Ambercon circuit.

This project is a way to use the rules without the Amber setting, though the setting is apparently Amber inspired.

And yeah, the patronage is pretty much just paying in to get the book made. The lead author is something like 80% done the writing already, so it's not like patrons get to have much influence on the copy.
