I am currently in a love-hate relationship with “The Impossible Astronaut”. I loved some parts, were intrigued by others, annoyed by some, and overall, just left very unsatisfied. ( Shh SPOILERS! )
I'm worried about all the cuts that was probably made for it
Just so you know, it wasn't cut. I watched both. This has been the trend at least for season 5. I went through the whole season while on maternity leave comparing BBCA with the BBC and only the episodes that ran over 45 minutes were cut. Since TIA was 45 minutes, it wasn't cut.
Oh, I know that pregnant women can drink a glass of wine, and that generally it's okay as long as it's not drinking for the effect (ie, drinking to get drunk). But on a post on the doctorwho comm, some people were using that as a reason why she can't actually be pregnant. There are a lot of people who still don't think pregnant women should drink alcohol, and I think a good chunk of the population fall into this category. Since there are a lot of clashing opinions about drink vs no drink for pregnant women, and considering that there has been a "Oh she can't drink, she must be pregnant!" mindset, that including Amy drinking wine is a big hint that she's not actually pregnant.
It’s been said that when River first meets the Doctor, it will be the last time he meets her.
I'm beginning to think that this is a red herring statement.
ex., in the same vein of: "You will never see tomorrow. There is only today."
It's a self evident truth; of course the first time River meets the Doctor, as she hasn't seen him before, is the last time the Doctor will see her, because, before then, she hasn't seen him before. This doesn't necessarily mean that River kills the Doctor (although, I do think that she does. Just saying that this statement, being self-evident, is not criterion that can be used to support that theory).
Is that making sense to anyone else?
And yeah, commerical cut fail. Why can't we just watch the Confidentials at the end? It was horrible, there were times during ten's reign where they'd actually show spoilers in the confidentals (I get the impression that in the UK these air after the show, not during). It was so anti-climatic to be spoiled moments before something happens in the show.
Okay, so here's the timeline. A------------------B A is SitL/FotD, and B is the first time River meets the Doctor. River goes from B to A, while the Doctor goes from A to B. That is their timeline and it's between A and B that they have all their adventures. After meeting the Doctor for the first time in B, he won't see her again. So yeah, the whole 'the first time River meets the Doctor, it will be the last time he meets her' actually makes sense without the whole 'Imma keel you" thing.
I believe it's okay for pregnant women to drink some wine, but the topic is still heavily disputed and different studies have shown different things. Considering this, since there are a lot of clashing opinions, I think as a whole, most people suggest abstaining from alcohol just to be safe. I'm also reminded of a lot of soap-operas: you know a female character is pregnant if she faints all of a sudden or if she doesn't drink alcohol. It's usually used as a dead giveaway in shows and movies and I think that including Amy drinking wine is a big hint that she's not actually pregnant.
"you know a female character is pregnant if she faints all of a sudden or if she doesn't drink alcohol. ... Amy drinking wine is a big hint that she's not actually pregnant... I think that including Amy drinking wine is a big hint that she's not actually pregnant"
Huh? Drinking Wine proves she is not pregnant? Health benefits of Wine (cause a little wine is recommended) and the 'Feeling sick' (River was feeling it too) aside' she SAID she was pregnant, she even tried to tell him in the "Time" & "Space" and other times before 601.
If we SHE didn't 'confess' maybe there is room to speculate.
I believe Amy thinks she is Pregnant (she probably is), whether or not something else Sci-fi is going on is not known to her or us yet.
5. The Astronaut My personal vote for “who’s in the suit/who kills the Doctor?” IS... The Doctor. Now, we all know River killed -someone- and thus, she’s in prison for it. But if she had killed the Doctor in this instance, wouldn’t the guards know what America is, that it’s not a planet and that it’s the place where she committed murder? Also, if she killed someone in 1969, how would she end up in the 52nd century? The thing with the blue envelopes was all “who does the Doctor trust the most?” and the answer was himself. If he knew it was himself in the suit, wouldn’t he trust himself enough to let himself kill him? ...If that makes any sense at all XD
Here from the doctorwho comm, and I like this theory. The way they filmed the Doctor's conversation with the astronaut was very reminiscent of Four's conversation with the Watcher in Logopolis, who of course turned out to be a projection of his next incarnation and made the preparations for his death.
From other speculation posts I've read, there have been a lot of scenes reminiscent to past episodes, so it makes me wonder if Moffet is doing all this on purpose, and is thus, leading us to the episode Logopolis and in turn, to the fact that the astronaut is the Doctor.
On number five that's an interesting theory and got me thinking, what if all of the wibbyly-wobbly timey-wimey stuff finally got the better of the Doctor and there were then two Doctors running around at the same time and one of them had to die? Then it would make sense that one had to kill the other since there's no way Amy/River/Rory would kill him, wonder if all of this will be revealed next episode or if this is going to be a mystery for the first half of the season (or maybe even the entire season).
Oh I do hope the astronaut's identity isn't the on-going mystery for the entire series. I already want it to be next Saturday. I can't wait an entire series to find out his (or her) identity!

Obviously drinking heavily while pregnant is dangerous however Pregnant women can drink a small glass of wine every day safely
