giving up

I spent the last couple of days trying to secure a job and an apartment in Boston, and it's fair to say that I failed miserably. Joe and I found a perfect apartment for the two of us, but the lease had to be signed today, and since I don't have a job nailed down yet, I had to pass on the apartment. So, it looks like Joe and I won't be living ( Read more... )

It doesn't sound to me as if you "screwed things up" - it's not like you're slacking. You're beating the pavement to find a job, and I think you're perfectly right not to sign a lease (and incur financial responsibility) until you can be sure you can honor it. It's not your fault Joe has to find a sublet - he'd have to do that anyway if you weren't in the picture. Go easy on yourself. You're trying.

I'm sorry, I know this was a whiny entry. Thanks for your support - sometimes I find it funny that I get so much encouragement from you, and we've only met once! But it's greatly appreciated. :)

Anyway, is finding a job straight out of college always this hard? I find that I'm working my butt off, and applying to everything that sounds remotely close to teaching, and still nothing. It's very depressing.

Well, I'm encouraging because I've been there. I didn't have trouble finding work after college, but that's only because I had to take secretary work since no one hires musicians. :) I opted to pay the bills during the day and work on music on the side, and in the long run, it was a good decision because eventually (by a long, circuitous route) I ended up in software QA, which has been a wonderful career for me. Of course, now I'm going back to school for music in the fall, talk about coming full circle... Anyway, all I'm saying is that sometimes things happen for a reason. Do the best you can to do the thing you want to do, and if somehow that falls through, you might get lucky like me and find an excellent alternative, and eventually get back to what you want after some really great experiences. Life isn't a straight line. Go for what you want, but if you end up taking a curve, it's not always a bad thing.
