Volleyball

Played 'volleyball' yesterday for the first time since my second knee surgery. I put quotes around that because I didn't really play volleyball, but did 45 minutes of warm-up exercises. That was good enough. I didn't want to stress my aching knee more than I had too - and I didn't think I was really in good enough shape for full-on volleying. My back agreed with me, and I think was thanking me for not taking it too rough, but punishing me for making it work.

My right knee, however, was fine.

It's an interesting thing about my knee injury. In October 2004, me and another guy started a little volleyball group that played indoors every week. We got pretty good, and we gathered more and more people as the time went on. However, when we moved to sand courts in Summer 2005, things got harder - we were pushing ourselves harder than we'd ever done inside. That's when I 'broke' my knee. But I've already written about that. The interesting thing is that people haven't played much since I've been out. Isn't that for an interesting commentary on my life? I might not have influenced them to better the world, but I did bring a nice group of people together for a sport and meet some other nice people. It sounds like a compliment to me.

And I'll get them back together again. Volleyball is making a comeback baby.

Some random things I forgot to make LJ entires about:

I went crabbing last weekend at the Oregon coast. Unfortunately, I don't have pictures myself, but once I get them I'll try to share them. From what I've seen of the person actually snapping the photos, there's not very good, unfortunately. You can only keep males that are 6 inches in width or wider (not including the legs), so we actually only got one that day that was a keeper - but it was probably because we missed the tide. Let me tell you, though, Titan (which is what we named our catch) was a big sucker, and his claws were pretty powerful.

Crabbing is very interesting activity - it's a lot like fishing, with almost a guaranteed catch (catch yes, keep... uh, maybe not) and little skill involved. Plus, the gear is like... cheap, and so it the license. You might come back empty handed, but it certainly is a fun activity to engage in. If anyone comes back out to Oregon, I'm gonna take them hunting for some Dungeness, mark my words (and I'm looking right at you etoiledesoiree). I hope to make another show of it soon.

I went to Mt St. Helens again in August. I got to explore "Ape's Cave" on the south side of the mountain. It's a lava tube (2nd largest in the country?) from a 2000 year old eruption of the mountain. No light penetrates that sucker, it's about 40 feet underground, and miles long. It's also a constant 42 degrees year round. I thought it was fascinating, and I so want to go again when I'm not with a bunch of girls. If anyone wants to explore the south side of the volcano with me again some day, I'll be on that one too.
