‘Not good,’ Clayton thought glumly to himself. From behind him he heard Crow emit a small “eep”.

Future Pearl approached slowly, gun level at the three men and the ‘bots. “You didn’t really think that we wouldn’t notice that something was amiss. Really guys, we’re not that stupid.”

Tom snorted quietly. “Coulda fooled me…”

A stern beep from Cambot shut him up.

“Come on, Mrs. Forrester,” Joel said, addressing the Pearl from the future. “Don’t you think it’s time to move on from this? I mean, forcing a guy and a couple robots to watch bad movies can’t possibly be a full and satisfying life.”

“Here’s the thing, Nelson,” Pearl said, her voice taking on a ‘what are you, stupid?’ tone. “Everyone needs a goal in life. Mine happens to be to become the ruler of the entire world. Now, in order to get from point A to point B, I need a plan of some sorts. Why bother thinking up something new when I already had a tried and tested method at my disposal?”

“Besides,” Mother Pearl said, swinging a chummy arm around Future Pearl’s shoulders. “With two of us now at the helm we’re a-shooing for finding the right film to crack you lot like an egg. Why stop now?”

“Because it’s futile and you know it!” Mike protested. “Do you really want to waste the rest of your lives doing this?”

Future Pearl gave him an unyielding look. “A waste to you it may be, but it’s our way to the top for us.”

Mike was about to protest some more when he felt a hand on each shoulder give him a little pull back.

“Give it up, Nelson,” Clayton muttered from his left. “They won’t buy it.”

Joel, on his right, nodded. “We need another way,” he whispered.

Behind them the ‘bots stayed silent. Joel quickly and wordlessly communicated to them to stay back and quiet. He desperately hoped that they would take his advice. He didn’t want to put them at any more risk than they already are.

“As for you,” Future Pearl said, waving the gun at her son. “I can’t say I’m surprised. For once you had a decent idea and was finally on the road of living up to the Forrester name and what do you do? You give up! You should be on your knees thanking me for continuing your work.”

“I, however,” said Clayton through his teeth. “Know when enough is enough. And I, unlike you, am a proper scientist. This little fact gives me the advantage of learning from my mistakes and experiments, which you clearly have not.”

Joel and Mike slowly backed away and joined the ‘bots. The situation was out of their hands now, and they knew it. All they could do now was hope for the best.

Clayton went on. “That second childhood gave me time to think, and I’ve realized that I don’t want to waste my life doing something so utterly pointless.”

“Pointless?” Mother Pearl shrieked. “You call ruling the world pointless?”

“Yes!” Clayton shouted. “So you rule the world. Then what? What’s the point of it?”

“What do you mean, ‘what’s the point?’? Mother Pearl shot back. “You would own the world! You could have anything you could imagine! You could control everyone and everything! You would have power!”

“There are two types of people in this world, Clayton,” Future Pearl said. “Those who control and those who are controlled. Which would you rather be?”

“I’d rather have an actual life!” Clayton countered. “Everything I want I can get without going through all the trouble of ruling the world. What could be so important, so outrageous, so huge that you need an iron fist around the Earth to get it?”

“Control!” Mother Pearl shouted. “Power! Power over the whole world! What more do you want?”

“I want a reason!” Clayton shot back at his mother. “What good is control and power if you don’t even really need it? Damnit Mother, even I came to this realization! Why can’t you?”

As Clayton said this, Joel heard a little movement behind him. Turning around, he was Gypsy starting to stalk off.

“Gypsy!” he whispered as loudly as he dared.

The purple robot paused for a second and looked at him. “Just trust me on this, Joel,” she said before continuing her progress. Joel bit his lip, hoping that Gypsy knew what she was doing.

Mother Pearl took a few steps closer to her son, her hardened gaze never leaving his. “I knew you never had it in you, Clayton,” she spat. “This isn’t how I raised you to be.”

“No, it wasn’t,” Clayton said, his voice quivering slightly with anger and frustration. “But it almost worked. Luckily for me, I got a second chance. This time, I’m not wasting it on trying to be what you want me to be.”

Future Pearl rolled her eyes. “Enough talk,” she said, raising her gun again.

Joel barely had time to register what happened next. Like a snake Gypsy had snuck up behind Mother Pearl and lashed out with her long tube-like body. Mother Pearl fell backward as Clayton jumped out of the way, lunging at Future Pearl.

At the same time Future Pearl had taken aim at Mike and was about to pull the trigger when the gun seemed to be yanked out of her hands by an invisible force. Clayton ran full force into her and the mother and son fell to the ground together, shouting and lashing out at each other as they went.

A split second later a crack rang out and Future Pearl went limp. A small feathered dart was sticking out from her side. Mike slowly lowered the gun with a look of disbelief on his face.

The whole brawl lasted less than five seconds, as far as Joel could tell. His lungs burned as he realized that he had been holding his breath for those five seconds. He let the breath out.

“Whoa,” Crow said, breaking the silence after a while. “That was intense.”

“Thank you, Captain Obvious,” Tom said, though he sounded quite astounded as well.

Clayton, now sporting a busted lip, staggered to his feet. “Thanks, Mike,” he said as he tried to catch his breath.

Mike quickly disposed of the gun as if it was a venomous spider. “Just doing what I had to. I guess those Starchild powers come in handy, huh?” he said as Clayton shrugged. He hadn’t meant to will the gun out of Pearl’s hand, but he wasn’t about to complain about his luck.

As if he just thought of it, Joel suddenly asked, “Hey, what were the ‘bots doing out here anyway? You said they were someplace safe!”

“They were,” Clayton said, giving Tom and Crow a small glare. “They refused to stay at Joel’s place, and apparently they weren’t content to stay in the car either.”

“Could you blame us?” Tom said. “We weren’t going to stay there and let you humans have all the fun.”

“Uh, guys?” Gypsy called from where she and Cambot were inspecting the unconscious Mother Pearl. “I hate to rain on your parade, but I think we have a little bit of a situation here.”

The three men and two robots walked/hovered to see what Gypsy was talking about. When they did, none of them could hold back a cringe. Pearl’s head had landed hard on a rock, causing a large and serious looking injury. Mike leaned down and checked her pulse.

“Well, she’s alive at least,” he announced, standing back up. Clayton had taken off his lab coat and, with some help from Joel, was ripping it up into strips and carefully wrapping it around the injury.

“What are we going to do with them?” Crow wondered, looking away from the bloody scene. “We’re not just going to leave them here, are we?”

“Of course not, Crow,” Mike said, though he sounded uncertain. “But how do we make sure they don’t come after us again?”

Clayton looked up once he and Joel had finished with Pearl. “I think I have an idea.”
