I'm Selfish and I'm Not Sorry

Aug 07, 2007 09:20

Possibly because I am (close your eyes, guys, probable TMI moment here) on the rag, but today I feel very much like a razor blade looking to seriously slice a bloody gash into modern society. Specifically modern parents who totally go overboard with making Baby their entire universe and don't see how utterly awful that is ( Read more... )

I completely feel you on this one. Lately I've been finding myself enraged by people on LJ the titles of whose journals contain the words "mother," "mama," "mommy," or the dreaded "momma" (this spelling grates on me the most as it strikes me as so pedestrian fuddy-duddy I think because of that old comic "Momma" -- anyway, I digress). I feel a primal revulsion any time I ever see a woman defining herself solely in terms of motherhood, especially if it's "so-and-so's mom." In my not-so-humble opinion, the only way I would identify myself that way is in a temporary fashion to a teacher whom I'd never met or some other similar appropriately child-centric situation ( ... )

You totally get where I'm coming from! Your approach to parenthood is so refreshing compared to what I normally come up against. My friends Austin and Kristen are also poster parents in my opinion, but then they also get the whole self work thing.

"Selfishness doesn't mean insensitivity" that's it in a nutshell. I get looked at like I have two heads around my office sometimes when I express opinions that put me first. Heh.

Babies fucking bore me. handleschmandle August 7 2007, 23:25:27 UTC
Yeah. I said it. And I cussed, too. And I know babies don't bore everyone, including all the childfree, but this childfree chick is bored by babies and all that crap that comes along with it.

When people identify themselves solely on what comes out of their crotch, it's annoying and sad. And what are they going to do with themselves once their project leaves the nest? It's not "miraculous" to breed (see "The Onion" for a hilarious article on this). Two stray dogs in the street with working parts can breed. Get over yourselves.

(See, I'm sassy, too! And I'm not even on the rag today. Reow!)

Maybe not, but I found it miraculous (or perhaps terribly ill-advised -- maybe even dangerous to humanity) that the hospital let me keep the Sea Monkey and even, like, take her home and stuff.

Oh...wait -- they let people way stupider than me take their babies home from the hospital. Never mind. Scratch that miraculous thing all together.

There are few things more annoying than trite sayings like "Being a parent makes you a better person" and other assorted bullshit like that. Maybe for some, but for all? HA! Yes, this is why we don't have things like kids being taken away from their parents by the law....or worse. I actually think that it's horrifying that anyone with functioning sexual organs can have a kid.

If more kids had intelligent and insightful parents like you, we probably wouldn't live in such a fucked up world overall.
