From a male perspective, part of me wonders if Deep Space Nine was too "macho" for most female viewers (what with me loving that spinoff to bits for its overarching operatic narrative). Kira > Sisko, of course (usually XD), but maybe she needed to pull actual rank on him to substantiate a qualitative superiority? ^^;

Without having seen DS9 and being able to compare, I don't think that the gender perspective can have counted for much negative for female viewers because we're simply so used to it - it's not like TNG does much for gender equality either. But this time, it's really... good, for a lack of better word, to see Janeway as the one giving the orders. Whatever it says about the state of popular culture when that is enough to make me feel a little bit more empowered.

I guess TNG was generally more optimistic and irreverent...? I grew up on it when I was 9-13 so I'm its most ardent defender (against the older fans who grew up on the original and despise TNG...) ^^ They definitely could have done more with Ensign Ro (I'll just say DS9 took that archetype to its fullest in the form of Major Kira. :3)

TNG had Data, and that was enough for me.
