Something tells me that I need to learn how to keep my posts here on one topic.

Yeah, I've had my laughs and my facepalm and my brainbreak over it, but damn if they didn't almost make me cry with Watanuki this time around. I don't really have anything more than that to say, except some obligatory comment about how much I am going to hate them if they take this away ( Read more... )

I enjoyed Voyager throughout its 1995-2001 run, but I still believe they kinda shot themselves in the foot, potential-wise on day one. ^~; B'Elanna (yay, you got it) and Tuvok were kinda done already in previous Trek shows. So it pretty much became Doctor / Seven of Nine / Doctor / Seven of Nine / etc. (with Janeway directing traffic).

From a male perspective, part of me wonders if Deep Space Nine was too "macho" for most female viewers (what with me loving that spinoff to bits for its overarching operatic narrative). Kira > Sisko, of course (usually XD), but maybe she needed to pull actual rank on him to substantiate a qualitative superiority? ^^;

What can I say? I like Klingons :/ but the distance from all and any motherhood cultures didn't really give Voyager much to work with there beyond making sure that we know that they're not racist. I do remember that I always liked TNG better, but since I was sixteen and since I remember as good as nothing from either show, I can't tell you why.

Without having seen DS9 and being able to compare, I don't think that the gender perspective can have counted for much negative for female viewers because we're simply so used to it - it's not like TNG does much for gender equality either. But this time, it's really... good, for a lack of better word, to see Janeway as the one giving the orders. Whatever it says about the state of popular culture when that is enough to make me feel a little bit more empowered.

*smart* Klingons especially... <3 47nite May 24 2009, 20:03:49 UTC
It didn't help either that the Voyager crew already had a human majority so they'd openly pine for the Alpha Quadrant and Earth, disregarding the few races from non-Gaian homeworlds and the Beta Quadrant (*cough* Klingons). ^~;

I guess TNG was generally more optimistic and irreverent...? I grew up on it when I was 9-13 so I'm its most ardent defender (against the older fans who grew up on the original and despise TNG...) ^^ They definitely could have done more with Ensign Ro (I'll just say DS9 took that archetype to its fullest in the form of Major Kira. :3)

I always assumed that the alien races were of an origin that was close enough to earth so that the non-human part of the crew more or less was in the same situation as the earthlings *is not learned about the geography of the ST universe*

TNG had Data, and that was enough for me.

I'm mostly just bitter about how badly Tsubasa is messing up Watanuki's life, you know. He deserves to be happy :(
