Sadly, that doesn't sound all that different from some shoujo manga I've tried reading. >.> What is it with romance manga and the girl being treated like a possession? Do people really read this and see it as being romantic?
I've seen quite a few yaoi manga using this theme too, and it disturbs me. How many people seriously fantasize about someone forcing them into sex and then claiming it was their fault for being so attractive?
The worst part of it is probably how the girl here isn't particularly pretty (or so it's said), so it takes the tone of here I'm allowing you to be my girlfriend, and you won't even hold my hand in public. God, what's wrong with you? Played comically (look at him failing at handling girls!), but incredibly nasty under the surface.
I'm not sure what the romantic appeal in this was supposed to be - the fact that he wants her that much, or the chance that she might change him for the better? I read it for the fact that their interaction was funny, but it was hard to ignore how very not funny it would be if a REAL girl let a boy treat her like that.
Hiya! I'm a random person who stumbled upon your journal and I just haaaaave to reply :,D
That manga made me feel ALL KINDS OF UNCOMFORTABLE, even though I'm an adult OTL
I don't care if it's just something that happens in shoujo's and yaoi's and even yuri's or WHATEVER, I absolutely could not enjoy it at all because I can't handle it when people are in situations like that, I don't care if they're fictional ;A;
Though, I did like chapter 17 in vol. 4. (The only volume I own- it was a gift from a friend, so I didn't pay for it XD; But I did read about the others and the ending from my little sister who actually enjoyed it) I think that was the one where the Otaku gave the younger sister that cute stuffed bear <3
Unless I'm very wrong, you're one of the two people who have my ficjournal friended, and I have no problems with comments from people from the outside anyway *g*
I'm re-reading Hot Gimmick, and I have to admit that I don't find it as terrible as I possibly should. I think it's the style of it - the caricatured style makes it obvious that this isn't meant to be ~serious~ when he is being a jerk, and look, he's not always a jerk, and isn't it funny how he's confused about his own feelings anyway. It still remains that if it hadn't been portrayed as cutesy comedy, it would have been a seriously upsetting relationship. And that, of course, begs the question of how okay it really is to write this kind of story and excuse it because it isn't meant to be realistic anyway.
Actually I think I saw someone mention ya on hetalia_wank- NOT THAT THEY WERE SAYING ANYTHING BAD- I just got curious and clicked on your name XD
But yeah, that's true- keep in mind I only read vol. 4 and I haven't read it in a while XD I did notice that comical element to it though, so that does makes it kinda okay. I do worry about anyone who may take it too seriously, though; or worse yet, would see parallels between the manga and whatever relationships they might have irl xD;
So I guess it'd be alright for mature audiences or anyone who can tell that it's a comedy- a messed up comedy, but a comedy none-the-less XD

Well I guess the genre is divided in different group. But I wouldn't be able to explain the need of constant suffering from the heroin.
