Three legs, two wheels, one me

Jul 10, 2015 22:13

A few weeks ago, I walked a bicycle into a bicycle sales, supply and repair shop. As I told the people there, I had a bicycle that had not been ridden for at least five, and possibly ten years. I, myself, have not been on a bicycle for at least five, and probably closer to ten years. I wanted to know if the bicycle had a future, after which I ( Read more... )

Haddayr Copley Woods, who no longer seems to post to LJ but does have both a Twitter and a Wordpress blog, did bike with a cane -- well, actually, crutches -- but I believe doesn't currently use them. Or perhaps does. (I can be vaguer. It /is/ possible.) In any case, she did finagle some kludges around it ( ... )

That's actually who I thought it was, and so I found her blog but then couldn't find any specific references to biking-with-crutches on the blog so wondered if I mis-remembered. I did find a cool blog to add to my reading list, though.

It looks as though she went with an upright position, similar to where I ended up.

That's exactly who I was thinking of. nightengalesknd, I'm pretty sure she'd enjoy talking to a fellow cyclist who uses mobility aids, and she's got an email address listed on her Wordpress.

I think calling me a "cyclist" may be a bit premature (except maybe in the way we call first graders "mathematicians" when teaching subtraction.) I did get on the bicycle, get the 0.6 mile to the library and back with my stuff and not being dead. I don't think I would have managed 0.7 miles. The bicycle apparently uses a set of muscles entirely distinct from those used in dancing or walking, which haven't gotten any attention from me in the past decade since I was last on a bicycle.

You mentioned a backpack was not an option. Would it be viable to put a strap on your cane, sling it over one shoulder, and wear it on your back?

If not, what about velcro straps that could slide under the brake cables and then be wrapped around the cane?

I'm not sure I trust myself with anything fastened to me.

Velcro, however, has potential. . .
