Interesting - it's been awhile since I read them, but my husband just read the first one yesterday so it's in my mind.

Admittedly I am relatively unusual in the overlap between SF/fantasy reading and murder mystery reading, although I read mysteries for the characters, not the plot.

I think I read about the mysteries in some article unmasking Rowling as the author, then forgot about them, then picked up one at the grocery store trying to find a book for a plane ride. And got hooked.
