Summary: One of the turning points in Charlie's stay with the A.B.I.
“Actions like that are not acceptable for full fledged agents let alone those still in training,” Kyle spat into Charlie’s face as he pulled him into one of the main offices the moment they got back to head quarters. Kyle tried to never get angry but this fight had been brewing inside of him for the whole ten-hour flight.
“The A.B.I. works only off the tenuous relationships between our organization and the units of different races,” he continued as he slammed the door shut. “Actions like you displayed towards a suspect tonight were to ever trickle back to a powerful Alpha of any race we’d have a great blow to our power. The solid base of operations we have networked together over the last few centuries would snap back into our faces. Do you understand that?”
“I’m not an idiot,” Charlie spat back as he tightened his jaw. Even though he had a few inches on Kyle that height was wasted as he shrunk into himself like a child seconds away from a full-blown temper tantrum. Kyle would not have any of that. Before Charlie was dumped at his doorstep he had already dealt with Azarai, a girl who was as stubborn and hot headed as can be for over year. His sister while they were growing up was a scarier opponent than the boy in front of him.
“You aren’t giving me any evident supporting that statement here.” Kyle’s tone was clipped as he tried to hold his tongue further. A part of him screamed out that Charlie needed to be dealt with. He needed to be watched. The boy had only been here a handful of months but already Azarai, Kyle’s own charge, had fallen head over common sense for the boy. Azarai was special and very important so everyone treated her differently. Kyle knew that and knew it spoiled her a bit but she still was a good person. The boy in front of him now, he wasn’t to sure about. Every day Kyle was witness to all the corners the boy cut on training, his lack of respect for others and how he took advantage of Azarai’s feelings. As much as he was loathed to admit it, his gut was whispering distrust and caution of the boy.
The younger man stepped into Kyle’s space and tried drawing himself up to his full height. “Don’t talk to me-“
“Step off Charlie,” Kyle ordered him as his hands rose slowly in anticipation for a fight. Charlie’s tanned face was gaining a purple tone that Kyle knew meant his blood was boiling. In a physical confrontation Kyle knew he’d lose. He needed the boy to back down on his own. “Calm your self down Charlie. As the agent you now answer to I will talk to you however I see fit in order to get this through your head.”
“I’m not a kid,” Charlie stated boldly as he took a step back, probably not even aware he was doing it.
“You are not getting it. You are not a full fledged agent and if you don’t stop this you never will be.”
“Is that a threat?”
“Hate to sound cliché but it’s a damn promise.” The two men stared each other down neither being the first to break but Kyle was a handful of years older than him with way more experience under his belt. If the boy wanted to rage and throw a fit he could do it somewhere else but not here. Here he would learn how to not get information out of a suspect in such a violent method.
The suspect’s face flashed in his head. Charlie had fractured his cheek, swollen one eye shut and broken his nose and all from bashing his head into a cement wall repetitively. The A.B.I. had no place for that senseless violence, especially with a suspect who was nothing short of docile to begin with. Azarai had to bleed on the spot to heal the man enough not to go into a dangerous coma. Kyle was just thankful he had arrived with her in tow just in time. The boy had told his charge that it was in self-defense but Charlie had not a scratch on him. For her sake he hoped she believed him for now anyways. Until Kyle had a reason to throw his ass out he didn’t want to ruin her good moods. They didn’t come often now that she was away from her family full time and at such a young age.
Charlie shifted his stance as if getting ready for a fight. Kyle couldn’t understand how his first response was always violence. Senseless violence was just a pathetic vie for attention. He sighed and turned towards his desk but not before muttering a sort of shield spell under his breath and touching the amulet at his right wrist.
“We’ll talk more when you are calm. Leave. I have work to do and a mess to clean up.” The spell sensed Charlie coming closer even though the boy was silent. “Step any closer and I will take that as a threat. Get out and cool down. We’ll talk about this tomorrow.” Kyle grabbed the case file from his desk and opened it. He kept his stance relaxed knowing that as of now he did not perceive the boy as a threat and he knew how that would drive the child insane.
A growl fell from the boy’s lips as he slammed open the door and walked out. Kyle could feel the anger radiating in waves after him. He waited until it lessened slightly before turning and closing the door. While shifting the case file he plucked a bone charm from a bracelet on his left wrist. It only took a bit of saliva and a few choice words to make the charm stick to the door creating a protection spell on his office door.
As he walked to his desk he realized in his few years here with all their blood and death never once had he had to cast a protection spell while in these walls. He fell into his chair heavy with thought and residual anger. That same feeling inside was screaming again. He needed to get through to that boy soon or he’d become unreachable. Kyle knew that once that happened Charlie would have to walk over his dead body to even look at Azarai again.
