My kids are bi-lingual, but Greek instead of Spanish. Hope I don't offend you, but I am sick of catering to the hispanics. They don't need to learn English here. We have everything in Spanish and English even recordings. Like you said everyone needs to the learn the language of the country they live in, and it's discrimination to hire someone less skilled because of a language. This whole thing makes me sick!!!

About Hispanics. ALot of the newer ones, the younger generation don't speak the langauge, or atleast not very well.
My dad's kids form his 2nd marriage don't speak much. I may actually know more than they do and yet my dad and evil step-mom made it a point to teach tem both. ALSO, my dad's g/f's kids whom are 1/2 Hispanic barely know any SPanish while Spanish, I believe, is her 1st language.
WHo knows, SPanish may be just like what happened w/ all the other languages of all the other people who came here in droves like Italian. Italians who came form Italy mostly spoke it but now you meet a 3rd or 4th generation Italian, they don't know that langauge.
Keep in mind also, I thin its wise to teach kids other languages in school so we cna compete on the global market AND w/ the war on terrorism. There is a shortage of people who speak Arabic...

Good point, I didn't think of the 3rd, and 4th generation.
I think Americans should know more than one lanuguage. My hubby is from Europe and it's not uncommon to meet people who know about 3 or 4 languages. But when you live in a country, you should learn that language just out of respect.:O)
i totally agree! if people come to america..they should learn english. seriously...we shouldn't have to learn another language for them. one time i was at a burger king in miami and the cashier couldn't understand me. WHAT THE HECK?!?! how can they hire someone that doesn't speak english?
I believe I was at that same Burger King in Miami. The girl didn't even know what a whopper was! I had to point at the pictures to order. Pretty pathetic!
^5!!!!!! I totally agree... Although I am fluent in Spanish, I believe that in America the national language is English, therefore they should learn English. I'm 1/2 spaniard and 1/2 french/irish. I am sick of all the damn hispanics who don't know a word of English who came over here to try n make a better life for themselves, but refuse to learn English. They think that Spanish is spoken everywhere when it isn't and sadly Spanish isn't even the second international business language... That's Japanese.
I wish I spoke Spanish; I really regret not learning it. I'm part Mexican, but from my father, whom I didn't live with, so I wasn't around it much. I speak some German and ancient Greek, neither of which are useful.
the whole problem of not being able to get a job down here really is annoying as hell. im doing the job hunt again this year. its rough. i understand a lot of spanish, seeing how i grew up here and all but i definitely cant speak it despite years of classes. useless.
I thought you were hispanic. No offense. Well, I'm 1/2 Hispanic.
Anyways, how much Spanish did you take before college? Was it in MIami or Broward county? I seriously think they need to re do the way they teach foreign languages. People that I know who are non-SPanish that take SPanish courses, some up to AP Spanish still feel insecure using their Spanish...
People from other countries learn about 4-5 other langauges and alotta people in America have a hard time with just one! But if we are to compete in the future, more Americans need to knoe more languages...
actually im irish. i took nine years of pre-college spanish. in miami dade county... not public school though (...catholic school girl). and all but two of those nine years were completely useless. completely. but for two years i managed to have a really good teacher.
