For those of you who havent seen the video, I recommend checking it out on launch, this song and video is a trip... I think Common is one of the last great poets, I realize thats giving him a lot of credit, but his words actually say something and theyre just set to music, separate the two and they work just as well, and he always has some message ( Read more... )

I hate the term 'uban poetry' I'm kind of a purist when it comes to poetry and when nearly an entire genre is based on one or two themes (WHOOO party or the streets are tough, yo) is makes me angry yes freestyling is fasincating but I'm also big on form and seeing that most freestyling and rap for that matter that ive heard keeps a simple aabb pattern i don't find it all that note worthy if its not taken farther--its a nice base like when you start writing but part of writing is different forms so you can make all the points and truths and everyone else you want but if everything you do is in the same pattern it is just like every song where someone says 'eh, all their shit sounds the same" and the song is ignored. With poetry, you learn the forms and rules and then expriment with a good deal of them and find what your best at but always experiment with form and word order and vocabulary--most poets of note may have had a main focus in their writing but they wrote about more than two or three themes--with the exception of most ( ... )
