I have determined that short of a miracle, I'm not getting the damn story done in time for December 31st. Have therefore given up on doing it as a contest entry. Is yet to be seen whether or not I give up on the story in its entirety.

Aw, don't give up. You've still got a whole month.

And not enough time within that month to accomplish anything. Decided to write something short and to the point like the others are doing--perhaps that way I stand a chance.

Perhaps spend a day trimming the outline instead of adding text? You're already way over any word count they were expecting. Could you find an earlier ending point, a later starting point, or a way to get from one to the other with fewer steps in between?

Went through the original idea and tried to figure that one out, but nothing doing, so now I've decided to to scrap the original idea for something a little more self-contained. Sure, this makes me both a quitter and a hack in one go, but I guess it could be worse.

I've decided it's probably best to do a shorter idea and save what I have on the first story for kicks later if I choose to continue it.

(And it's in parenthesis because that way, the lawn gnomes can hear it, too...)
