I think it was real autism since from what I read, he didn't seem like he was able to function all that well by himself. And yeah, it's amusing to me that she gets on her high horse about the nurse calling him mental and yet, from what I read she pretty much acted like he was an object instead of a real person making her just as bad as the 'nurse
