Louis is tall, just shy of 6', with a long, lean body others have described as akin to a dancer's. His skin is very pale, like polished marble, and very cold to the touch. Immediately after feeding, it becomes softer, warmer, and pinker - he can pass for a human easily without the need for gloves or sunglasses. He has long black hair that he usually cuts after it grows back every night and green eyes that are easily his most distinguishing feature. As far as clothes, he tends towards black jeans and sweaters that he'll wear until they fall apart.

Clothes he was brought to the House in

Louis is very quiet and introspective, preferring to read or watch the world around him than engage in conversation. To his friends, he is warm and kind; to those he doesn't know, he is timid and cool. Despite his quiet exterior, he craves physical affection and is always happy to return in kind when some is shown to him. Amongst his fellow vampires, he is considered the most in touch with his humanity. He also loves movies, since they show him the world that has been lost to him for so long.

Louis de Pointe du Lac was born on October 4, 1766 in France. When he was small, his father purchased a plantation outside of New Orleans called Pointe du Lac and moved the family there. Master de Pointe du Lac dies soon after, leaving Louis in charge of the plantation. When Louis is 25, in 1791, his younger brother Paul begins to see visions. He tries to convince Louis to sell the plantation to allow him to follow his visions, but Louis refuses and, following a violent argument, Paul falls down the stairs and breaks his neck. Madame de Pointe du Lac blames Louis for Paul's death and, grief-stricken, Louis moves the family into New Orleans proper and begins a downward spiral of drinking, gambling, and taking up with whores. One night, as he is about to be killed by a mugger, a blond angel of death intervenes: the vampire Lestat. Lestat offers Louis the Dark Gift and Louis accepts. The two live together for three years when, in 1794, Louis finds and drinks from a small girl named Claudia. Lestat, sensing that Louis is on the verge of leaving him, finishes the job, and turns Claudia into a vampire. Louis cannot leave his little girl, and so, the three form some kind of family.

Nearly seventy years later, in 1862, Claudia's mind has matured to a grown woman's, but her body remains that of a girl. She resents Lestat for taking away her adulthood, and convinces Louis to, if not aid her, at least not hinder her plans to kill Lestat. Following the murder, Louis and Claudia flee to Europe, trying to meet more of their own kind. While in France, they meet the Theater of the Vampires and Louis falls in love with its beautiful, charismatic leader, Armand. Claudia can tell Louis is going to abandon her for Armand, and so she insists that he turn a "mother" for her. He does, but soon after, the Theater of the Vampires discovers Claudia's crime against her own kind and expose her and Madeleine to the sun, killing them both. In revenge, Louis sets the Theater on fire, killing everyone within except Armand. Over the next year, he and Armand travel the world together, but part in New Orleans. Louis remains in seclusion, moving to San Francisco at some point before 1975, when he meets a young reporter named Daniel Molloy, to whom he tells his life story. The book is published as Interview with the Vampire.

Ten years later, in late 1985, an apparent follow-up to Interview is published, titled The Vampire Lestat. Louis reads it and realizes that though it's touted as fiction, it's clearly Lestat's work, and he is alive and well somewhere. He tracks him down just outside of Los Angeles, and their reunion is joyous. The next day, on October 31, 1985, Lestat is kidnapped by the vampire queen Akasha and Louis joins the rest of the Coven of the Articulate to help save him. Akasha is finally defeated and Louis and Lestat are reunited once again. They live with the rest of the vampires on Night Island for five quiet years, until one day, Louis wakes up in a strange House with a strange bracelet...
