Just Lovely

One of my students has filed a greivance against me and my college on the grounds that:
  • I am an anti-Christ
  • The course title (Religion in America) is deceptive.  ("It should state examining all religions and occult practices in America from a sociologist prospective[sic].")
  • I described religions positively as long as the subject was not Christianity
  • I ( Read more... )

Just think of the amusement that the greivance review committee will have when reading the complaint!

I think the bit about the course title is my favorite. I mean, seriously, what was I thinking when I approached the topic neutrally? And how could anyone have guessed that "Religion in America" would cover a wide variety of beliefs in America? That was totally obfuscated by the name.

Mostly it pisses me off that I struggled to accomodate a student who was having trouble looking outside of his own beliefs but who claimed straight to my face that he was there to learn about another beliefs and not cause trouble.

I'd be upset that I was called "an antichrist" instead of "THE antichrist". Guess they didn't think you were that bad. :)

Actually, I'm not sure that "the antichrist" is ever mentioned in the Bible. It was one of the things Richard (the student in question) corrected me on. There are several references to antichrists, but I can't actually find a reference to it being in the singular.

Some of these tender little homeschooled babies have such a difficult time dealing with breaches in their religious firewall. You blew a hole in it, and ruined his pretty little world. You did not fit his pattern, and so you scared him.

Good for you.

This is deeply amusing.

What did your Dean say about his paper?

I didn't speak directly with the dean about the paper. I showed it to my supervisor, who showed it to the dean. The supervisor then helped put the crazy thing in perspective which helped me fairly grade it. It was opinionated, off topic, not based on fact, avoided class materials, used minimal supporting evidence... plenty of stuff to sink him on without having to deal with the fact that, among other things, he put into the exam that I had worked manipulative magic against the class.

I think the 'I intimidated him' speaks for itself. I don't know whether to jump on that from a religious, feminist, political or academic wagon, so I think I'll just stew, there's so much to choose from.

As for the, ah, 'untrue' statement, well, that's just the cherry on the icing of a rather obnoxious cake, really. Treausre it: I'm sure you can quote it and someday, (maybe, hopefully?) laugh.
