Understanding without words / Misunderstanding with Them

I've never considered myself particularly empathic, but it struck me last night how much information can be communicated even to me without the point actually being expressed in words.

I'm currently doing a run at a community theatre, during which I shut off my phone.  Afterward, I see my father has called at 10:30pm - 11:30pm his time.  Crap.  ( Read more... )

Both my grandmothers had congestive heart failure.

It's something to watch out for, but not immediately fatal. My dad's mom was in her mid 80's when she got it, and my mom's mom was 90, I believe. It was fatal for them eventually, but probably due to their ages.

Yeah, both of Dad's parents had it, I think. But the bad heart genes are on Dad's side of the family, not Mom's. No one on Mom's side has any history of heart problems, and Mom's only 56 and on a low fat diet, so the idea that she was into congestive heart failure seemed really out there...that and it didn't fit the profile I had drawn up in my head from Dad's voicemail.

They found no damage to her heart, thankfully. Now they're suspecting it was a medication reaction.

My wife's friend's dad had a heart attack, and he is on a low fat diet and exercises every day. You just never know, really. I'm glad they didn't find any heart problems.

Dang, sorry to hear that your mom's having issues. With outpatient status, hopefully that means it's nothing horrible.

As for the other point of your post, I get that way sometimes. If my Dad called at that hour of the night, I'd absolutely know it's bad news. I liked how you described your inner Sherlock ticking off possibilities and eliminating them for one reason or another. Perfectly rational approach to what you were dreading might have been a horribly irrational problem.

Thanks. She's home and comfortable. They've found nothing wrong with her heart at all. Now they're suspecting it was a bar reaction to a medication she was on, so she's no longer taking it. She had a similar episode last year that immediately vanished as well.
