I found one lurking above my shower head. Got a decent look before it, ah, went away. Based on pics online (and location, as well as other possible factors) I think it was either a hobo spider or a very brave brown recluse.
Either way... *shudders*
Dealt with black widows before, they scare the living dalights outta me. The females are so... big and black and shiny with that blood red hourglass. *shudders*
I confess that I ADORE black widows. My office is currently home to...a lot of them. There is a 1,500-square-foot manufacturing area in the middle of the building that's now not being used and the widows just love it. I have a poke around every morning to find and say hi to the ladies, sometimes give them some cricket treats. One of 'em is a big mama. So pretty. I'm lucky in that the company owners like spiders, so they don't think I'm strange and don't feel a need to exterminate

You'll be so proud of me- I have been doing my level best to tolerate the house spiders, so long as they take up residence in a corner and STAY THERE. Anything that just wanders the house usually gets eaten by a cat... Chihiro loves spiders.
There is a house spider that has moved into one of the upper corners of the shower, which makes me nervous, but I know it is harmless. If one of our brown recluses moved in up there, I'd scream like a little schoolgirl and probably fall out of the shower and run screaming into the night...
Yay, Poptarts! :) House spiders are good. They don't tend to wander much and they have a liking for nasty bugs that...well...bug me. :) They do like showers, though, which can be disconcerting if you're not strange like me. Showers are a good source of water, given that houses, from a bug point of view, are extremely water-poor environments.
You know, I think I have weird cats. They have zero interest in spiders or, alas, in box elder bugs. Probably because the latter are said to taste really bad. But crickets? They are ALL OVER crickets. :)
Poor brown recluses. They have gotten such a bad rap, mostly for no reason. It amuses me when I hear of someone in, like, New York City or LA yelling in a panic about being bitten by one. Since, you know, they don't exist in either NYC or LA. *rolls eyes* They are in Ohio, though. :) Wanna send me some? :) Pweeeeeeeeease?
You can have all the recluses that live in my basement- they come inside from the garage in the winter, we discovered. *eyeroll* So long as they stay downstairs and don't go walkabout in the rest of the house, we can live together in peace. Honestly, this is due more to the fact that Chihiro will eat them, than that I will do anything more than scream and jump on furniture. Chihiro LOVES crickets, too! And house centipedes. And anything with six or more legs, really. XD She really likes the mock-ladybugs that come in during the fall to die/hibernate in the house. They're lots of fun for Floor Soccer. She was batting one around just the other day, in fact

Yep, I think Cincy is about the farthest north that they go. Lucky you. :) They're not really walkabout kind of spiders, not like, say, wolf spiders. Or widows, for that matter. They do hunt rather than do the sit-on-web-and-wait-for-food thing, though. They hunt at night, hole up on webs during the day. Males wander more than females, IIRC, which is pretty typical of hunting spiders. Problems with humans arise when they decide to hole up in people's shoes or clothing for the day. Same thing happens with widows, resulting in accidental squishings and bites

I tolerate spiders in the house, because they eat the bugs. (Except we haven't got spiders manly enough to handle the giant cockroaches common around here). I find the little jumper spiders cute, especially when they wave their little palps at you. Geckos are also adorable housemates.
I do not tolerate things that can kill me or cause severe illness in the house, so black widows and brown recluses get squashed. I have the same attitude about snakes: green snakes and king snakes are adorable, pygmy rattlers do not get to hang around the yard.
It's funny. I know a lot of arachnophobic people who will actually say that jumping spiders are cute. I've often wondered why. I guess maybe it's because they're tiny and so don't seem so icky. They do have large fangs for their size, though, and if you're smaller than them, they are a wicked, wicked predator. ;) I happen to like their two big eyes; that's what makes them adorable to me. But then, I think all spiders are adorable, so
