Kangin watched the chaos around him. Everyone was a mass of screams and confusion, giving him a throbbing headache and a strong urge to strangle someone. Sighing, he stood up, grabbed his jacket, and headed for the door, needing air and a break from the noise. Arguments were not unusual in the house, but sometimes, a person just needed a time out from it all.

He softly shut the door and tightened the jacket around himself. It was a cold night and he felt all the more bitter at the others for forcing him out of the house because of it.

Muttering curses under his breath, Kangin took several steps forward before coming to a halt. He saw someone’s silhouette ahead of him, sitting on the ground, looking up at the sky. Squinting against the dark, he moved closer. “Donghae?”

The younger man glanced at Kangin for a second before turning his attention back to the sky. “Hyung. What are you doing out here?”

“I was trying to get away from all the noise. Now the better question is why are you out here?” Kangin was surprised to find that Donghae was not in the center of the mess of people in the house as usual.

The boy shrugged. “Same as you. Trying to find some peace and quiet.” He never took his eyes off the sky.

Kangin couldn’t help but chuckle. “Looking for aliens?” He stared as the young man’s eyes directed themselves toward him. He was smiling softly, but there was no humor in those eyes.

“Didn’t you know, hyung?” Donghae sighed. “There’s no such things as aliens.” His eyes didn’t shine with the usual curiosity or child-like innocence that Kangin had always secretly cherished. “That stuff’s for children and the time comes when you just have to grow out of it.”

Kangin gaped at the boy in front of him, who refocused his eyes back at the sky, and moved to stand closer to him. The boy hadn’t moved. Kangin shook his head, but he couldn’t get that look in Donghae’s eyes out of his mind. It’s true, he had often complained about Donghae’s childish behavior and his obsession with aliens, always telling him that one of these days, he needed to grow up, but not at the expense of taking the life out of those eyes. “Hae…” He wanted to take a step closer, but didn’t want to invade on the boy‘s personal space.

A light breeze blew and he closed his jacket tighter, shivering slightly. He breathed out heavily and watched the white smoke billow out of his mouth and hover in the air above him. The night was getting colder.

He heard, more than saw, the other boy shivering violently, teeth clacking together and breath coming out in bursts and gasps. “Geez, Hae. Why didn’t you bring a jacket when you came out here?”

Donghae could barely let out a coherent response, focused more on keeping himself warm than keeping up a decent conversation. Kangin heard him quietly mutter, “Forgot,” then saw the boy try to blow warm air into his cupped hands unsuccessfully.

“Maybe we should go back inside,” Kangin suggested, a tinge of worry in his voice. Staying out there any longer was not good for the younger man’s health and he didn’t need Eeteuk scolding him for letting his dongsaeng get sick.

“No!” Donghae exclaimed with more force than was necessary. “Just a little bit longer.” He turned his pleading eyes to Kangin. “Please?”

Sighing, Kagin sat down behind Donghae and held his jacket open, inviting the boy to come to him. Donghae slowly crawled toward Kangin and settled between his legs, back facing the older man. Kangin hugged the boy tightly within the jacket. “You’re really stubborn, you know?”

“Sorry.” He heard Donghae let out a soft sigh and felt a shiver course through the smaller man’s body. He tightened his hold on the boy and looked up at the sky too.

Donghae settled his head on Kangin’s shoulder and the two sat together, staring up at the stars together. Kangin felt his tension ease and he couldn’t help but smile. Donghae, for all that he tried to act like an adult, was still a kid inside who wanted and needed his protection. “You know, Hae, believing in aliens isn’t such a bad thing. I mean, there have been times when I’ve wondered, too, if they really exist.”

“Really?” Kangin could hear the surprise in Donghae’s voice. He nodded and heard the young man chuckling softly. “Hyung…are you sure you haven’t turned into an alien yourself?”

Kangin laughed loudly, abruptly. “You know, I have been feeling different lately.”

Kangin felt the boy’s body shake as Donghae tried to contain his laughter. Failing, he began to laugh out loud along with Kangin.

A peaceful silence settled between the two and they sat, unmoving, staring at the stars. Kangin felt Donghae’s body relax against him and he knew that they would have to move inside soon, because the younger man was about to fall asleep.

But not yet. For now, Kangin wanted to sit with Donghae and enjoy the peace that was hardly granted any of them for a while. Donghae shivered again and Kangin held on even tighter. He smiled slightly and kept his eyes on the sky. There would come a day when Donghae would grow up and he wouldn’t need Kangin’s protection anymore. But today, right now, Donghae was cold and needed warmth and Kangin would give him that warmth and anything else his dongsaeng needed in order to keep him safe and happy. Holding on tightly, Kangin rocked back and forth and hummed softly into the night.
