INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY
- The course is geared towards HS students, but Lelouch might bat an eyelid towards a particularly promising MS student, but that’s more of an exception to a rule.
- Lelouch intends to conduct the class as he’s used to from university because he thinks it’s never too early to prepare you for ‘real academics’: so you’ll get a compulsory reading list you’re expected to go through.
- Lelouch will probably hand out a reading list as early as the first lesson and, because he likes discipline, he’ll also have a fixed schedule he’ll plan to adhere to.
- You’re not expected to buy any books. He’ll provide photocopies or upload things as a PDF file on a website he’ll set up just for that purpose.
- The final grade is determined by your contributions to the class discussions, voluntary essays and a final oral exam, in which you’re expected to demonstrate that you didn’t just learn the material off by heart, but understood it as well. He might opt for a written exam if discussions don’t prove to be fruitful. In written exams, he’d just test you on ‘dry theory’.
- The first few lessons will be him introducing a few key concepts, and then - when that’s been through and done with - to discuss a few texts from some influential philosophers: among them Plato, Descartes, and Kant.
- He expects everyone to stick to the schedule and be prepared. Class discussion is especially important to him because he thinks it's the heart and core of philosophy.
- Lelouch is strict, but fair. He won’t expect the impossible out of you, and as long as you play nice and don’t tarry, he'll not be too displeased.
