"this same legislation focuses punishment on illegals, while giving lip service to punishing the businesses who recruit illegal workers and provide them with fake Social Security numbers and other ID, in order to pay them less than minimum wage." i think this is the bigger problem: unchecked corporate greed and general shortsightedness is running this country into the ground...pick an example: health, education, environment...i'm oversimplifying, but that's just the overall feeling i get...
Agreed. We tend to blame the wrongs of others without recognizing our own wrongs. And it's not surprising considering that's what people do as individuals, so why not a country as a whole. Sure, there's a lot we could do to enforce the laws we already have on the books as regarding border patrol and such, but yeah, what about the businesses and the real moneymakers that are getting away with it because of this view that people have about immigrants. It's sad how much business is ingrained in our heads as being more worthy than people.
Blame bush for that. I favor making it a felony to hire an illegal immigrant for less than minimum wage. That would solve most of the problems. Companies would have no incentive to hire illegal immigrants if they had to pay them a standard wage.

I posted something yesterday to represent my ideas about this immigration debacle. But I didn't really voice my opinion in my own words. So now I will

I also strongly dislike with this new bullshit racist rant about, "Try going to another country (ie: Mexico) and doing the same thing immigrants are doing here!"
Well, there's also the problem that in Mexico there aren't jobs that pay a living wage. If there were, they wouldn't decide, arbitrarily, to hop a border and send money home to their families.
So, yeah... try to do what they do there, and you'll find yourself unemployed and undocumented. Sounds fun.
I was an undocumented worker back in 1999 when I was in Egypt. I didn't like working illegally and it was scary going in and out of the country. Thought they were going to get all crazy with me if they knew I was working there.
back from the march; I'll post pictures later. Suffice to say it was very peaceful and positive. A wide diversity of opinions were represented. I only saw one sign that demanded something I really disagreed with, which was to give illegals drivers licenses.
