Why would you go to Japan to just stay in Tokyo? Get out! Move about! There's nothing special in Tokyo! Trust me... I lived in Japan for three years.

A nice day trip from Tokyo is Nikko. Hakone and Mt Fuji. Yokohama's bay area and Chinatown are awesome. Kamakura is in day trip distance too. Hmmm... Hakone and Mt Fuji aren't really day trips though......

I highly recommend the Kite Museum in Nihonbashi. I also had a nice time following "A Walk Through Old Tokyo"

Places in Tokyo that aren't touristy? As in places that aren't popular for tourists--whether Japanese or foreign--to visit? I think those places you listed are just popular areas because they have a lot going on. They aren't necessarily tourist-friendly places. All together, I've spent a month in Tokyo and I really didn't see that many people who were clearly tourists, save for in Yokahama's China Town and in Asakusa's Kaminarimon. Of course all of the major temples in Kyoto are full of tourists during the summer. I saw so many foreign tourists at the Kyoto station and the temples and shrines ( ... )
