(no subject)

My grandmother insisted to me yesterday that she would drive me around if I got a job, so I can no longer use my inability to drive as an excuse to not look for work. I think I'm going to try applying to Blockbuster. That would be fun, wouldn't it?

I finished watching Last Exile the other night.

This show is really nice-looking. With the exception of one scene toward the end, the animation looked great through, and I quite liked the character designs as well. I also really liked the show's soundtrack. Speaking of music, I absolutely love the opening of this show. The visuals and music combine to create a dream-like feeling of soaring through the sky, and I could rarely bring myself to skip it. The ending was also nice, but it got old after the while.

The actual subject matter of the show didn't really grab me, which is a shame because the show had the potential to be so much better. It got off to a pretty good start, then kind of dragged in the middle, and then picked up a lot in the last eight episodes or so. I don't think it's the story that fell flat with me as much as it was the characters. None of them really grabbed me from the beginning except for Lavie, who ended up being terribly underutilized. Claus wasn't unlikable, but I didn't find him or his development to be particularly striking or memorable (although I did find it slightly amusing that everybody on the Silvana seemed to want to get into his overalls). I wasn't impressed with Alex Rowe. Sure he was a badass, but he was inexpressive to the point of being uninteresting, and I wasn't really impressed by his motivations. I was not at all fond of Tatiana, either. I just found her annoyingly and inexcusably arrogant for most of the series, and by the time she pulled the stick out of her ass it was too late for me to actually like her. As for the rest of the cast, I found most of them forgettable, though I did grow to really like a handful of them. It took me a while to get attached to any of the characters besides Mullin, though. I wasn't that impressed with the character development in the show either. I just didn't find it all that interesting.

Overall, I ultimately liked Last Exile, but it's not a new favorite.

Now I've begun to watch Fairy Tail. I'm only three episodes in, but I like it so far! I feel like I've been watching a lot of serious stuff lately, so I think it was time to indulge in a silly, colorful shounen. :)
