Tonight at the ramen restaurant, Ben and I met a man from Cameroon here in Kyoto for a week to attend a science lecture. He sat next to us and gingerly remarked that he couldn't understand a thing. All of us gaikokujin (a less harsh, modernized gaijin) are grateful for the pictures on the menu there. Just point and say kudasai, or just point. I ( Read more... )

I went to the 'famous' temple in Asakusa (and I've been to other shrines and such in the city) and I agree with you about the hustle/bustle. Not sure how bad it is there, but it's definitely a circus here. It's certainly NOT the sort of tranquil Zen experience I was imagining. Anyway, I except I'll have to go find a temple in the mountains for that -- which will warrant another trip I gather!
