So we're assigned to write a villanelle for my Literary Analysis class. The professor gave us some examples, but none of them showed me what I thought a villanelle could be. But then I found this one: ( Villanelle )
that marilyn hacker poem is in my book about poetry forms. it is excellent. Have you read "One Art" by Elizabeth Bishop? It's another villanelle that I really like (though it's nowhere near as brilliant as her famous sestina...). This icon is the first two stanzas of it
( ... )
aw yay! I'm really glad that you liked it enough to have lots to say. I actually printed out your email so I could get a better look at it, and I'm excited to have some ideas to play with.
I think I may be entirely ditching my A1 for a new line ending with "condone," tho... eep. I had something in mind for "cornerstone," but I can't seem to make it concrete. Ahghghga!
(that was a slightly frustrated, but also slightly intrigued "Ahghghga!," by the way)
oh! and yes I have read it--it's actually in one of our "textbooks." It's definitely an interesting one :) And pretty true to life. I'm definitely starting to master the art of losing. *grin*
What I really like about the rhymes is that they are examples of what I didn't realize rhymes could be back when I was writing couplets in fourth grade. Although I guess according to those silly teachers, "town" doesn't rhyme with "won't." But I think it certainly can. *smile*
