Vegitarian?

Jul 18, 2008 21:16

So for a small portion of my life I was largely on what could have been considered a vegitarian diet. My daily meals consisted of grains, fruits, veggies, and very rarely an exception allowing a bit of ground beef or chicken. At the time this had been due to needing to survive on about $15 or so a week in groceries ( Read more... )

The problem with a strictly vegan diet is that it's not healthy--there's too many things that vegans refuse to eat that are, frankly, next to impossible to replace with fruits and veggies.

I'd check out vegetarian not vegan web sites, especially ovolactavegetarianism (that is, vegetarian but you still eat eggs and drink milk), and look for stuff that's definitely about vegetarianism as a dietary option, not about OMG ANIMALS IS NOT FOOD! craziness.

I'm on a psuedovegetarian diet myself (I don't eat red meat) and that's pretty healthy if you balance everything out. Remember, fish is, for the most part, pretty good for you; high in protein but low in fat.

If you're losing meat entirely, you need to replace the protein and iron (you don't want to be anemic) in your diet somehow. You can get protein from beans and certain vegetables, but the iron is harder to replace (unless you're in the habit of chewing on anvils).

Ya see this is the type of info I'm looking for. I knew about about the protein, but had no clue about the iron.

And technically i need to update that as vegan is the wrong word for the diet I'm looking for (thank you for giving me the right one by the way).

I knew a bunch of militant vegans when I was in college and they annoyed me so much that I make it a point to disabuse people of the notion that veganism is a safe or healthy lifestyle. ^..^

And you're welcome. Good luck. :)

Since I couldn't care less about my diet and you've already pointed out that some people (me) still find you cute, I don't really have much to contribute with :P
I will give you a little tip though: Juice. Drink it.
Especially berry juice (gooseberry, elderberry, redcurrant, cranberry, blackberry) is good source of vitamins and a lot of them have beneficial effects on your health, plus they're usually a little lower in sugar levels than orange and apple juice.
Yoghurt and juice make a simple but tasty and filling smoothie.

Bhavani would totally be the girl for you to talk to, she lives off fruit, veggies, and only small portions of Chicken. You should also ask Gloria.

On a side note, we have a basketball/tennis court at my apartment complex and neighborhood behind it for jogging if you're game =P
